I'm just about 1 month in on my ASUS 5850 and no problems (paired with Windows 7 Professional 64bit OEM)and ive gotten all windows updates to date. could it be a specific maker (e.g. diamond, xfx, asus, gigabite) in anycase i assembled mine with a new computer, also did these people use wrist straps when installing? were they properly grounded? there are so many issues it could be, where to start?

All's I have to say is, "I thought ATi was going to pickup the ball and run with it, this seems to be a fumble on the 1 yard-line." With the possibility to recover and score, but we will see.

thanks for the topic, im experiencing this problem for like 8 months or smthing like that. firstly if was on my hd 4850 (win 32bit), i was getting stripes while playing some games (even old ones), on the other hand some new heavy games like GTA4, NFS Shift etc etc where running perfectly. i was tired of that bulls..t and decided to buy a new card, i took hd 5770. It was working perfectly while i was still using win xp 32bit, all games were running with no problems at all. But then i installed win 7 64bit and now.. now i cant launch ANY 3d application because my pc instatly freezes with the stripes all over the screen, sometimes this happens even when i'm surfing the net. Was contacting Sapphire support, updated everything (drivers, bios, vbios) and still nothing. Thats my last ATI card for sure.

LOL at the ATI/AMD fanboys doing spin control for THEIR ? company. This is getting exposed because of the public announcement surrounding the 5830 failing final testing. Theres probably a significant conflict in the whole line. Imagine people stoking the fires of this announcement, its karma with all the Fermi bashing.

I wish more News sites boomed with topic like this one, then they will truely take a close look at this problem.
Problem > Problem boomed in mass media > ATi's shares drops in price = Fixing problem ASAP to re-establish the reputation.
Oh, if only that was like that. But really, this is a massive problem so i hope it will go this way maybe ^^

Yes, nevertell cause nvidia never has any bad gpus.. Like ever... Their all flawless. Damn fanbois.

As far as the article, lets just hope it is a software issue, and not a hardware issue.

Had my 5870 since launch... first time hearing about the "grey" screen. Never really had any issues except drivers making it faster. :)

I literally just got a 4770 for a HTPC with a large 54" SDTV and was very impressed with its superior performance to the nvidia 8600gts it replaced and the 8800gt in my main gaming rig. I will keep an eye out for this. So far so good. I hope nothing goes wrong. I have to forward this article to a friend who is on a budget who just got a 4890...

If you go to Newegg and look at the customer comments on the 5xxx series cards namely the 5970 you will see alot of negative feedback mainly dealing with constant crashing. After reading quite of few of them I only found 1 positive comment with the rest stating problems with the card from all manafacturers. I am all for AMD/ATI giving Nvidia a run in the video card market but I will remain an Nvidia customer in the graphics department.

After myself having issues with ATI graphics originally with 4870 and now 5870 I returned the card to Newegg and got a Nvidia GTX285, much quieter and so far no issues.

It seems that it's very common for companies to push the limit of the Chips sacrificing quality for money! The same goes for memory and CPU manufacturers with exception of companies like Crucial and Intel, there is always lots of room for overclocking.

#2 - Bad system alchemy:

It is very possible and has happened often in the past that simply, some parts are not meant to be together. And as you can guess, the graphics card is usually the girl: causing problems with the guy (motherboard) and his deficient brother: the PSU. --- For the same reason than with #1, I don't think it is the problem.

I think the Graphics card should be the guy, seeing as how it plugs in to it, and after a few years it gets ditched and a new card is put in its place, or sometimes, we stick another in there to have better performance.

I've been running my 5850 since launch and it's been rock solid. My 4850 still runs great as well.

If it makes any difference, neither card has ever been overclocked. Not yet anyway.

I read several reviews on Newegg and I find your claims to be "Totally False"

i have a XFX 5770 XXX edition, with Win7 x86. it was alright until I entered CCC, and started trying to overclock it...i got it stable at 820mhz (core), 1420mhz (memory), and then it decides to hangup in crysis....

its perfectly stable, except for when in cloak mode, with like 14 explosions.... then it has a skitz.....

i think it has to do with OCing, or the stock mhz being too high for windows 7...somehow?

what you do click on the the 1 star ratings of people that got cards DOA.
the sapphire card has 25 five stars, 2 four stars, 1 three star, 3 two stars and 4 one stars and this is the 5970 with the most reviews

saw that people were also saying that this is affecting the 4850, been using mine pretty much none stop on a variety of games on windows 7 x86 with all the latest updates.

Have a Sapphire 5850 on order that should be arriving soon, will report back if I have any issues, buying from the UK
