My video card on WinXP Home is the 128 DDR ATI Radeon 9700 TX with TV/out.
It has always been listed that way under Device Manager/Display Adapters.
Windows Update had an "updated"driver which I downloaded yesterday (driver
6.14.10.6476, dated 8/25/2004). That date seemed old, so today I went to
the ATI site and downloaded the Catalyst 5.3 which has newer drivers.
However, the System Information now lists the card as Radeon 9500/9700. Did
I goof? Which is the best driver for my video card?
Thanks
John

The X700 is about on a par with a 9800, but architecturally is probably
closer to the 9700.

I'm suprised that the latest ATI driver doesn't list it as an X700
series or something.

Go to device manager, pull up the properties for your card, go to
details and tell us the device ID.

I'll check the drivers to see if they're showing up correctly.

Don't ever download drivers from Windows Update... get them only from ATi's
web site.

Ben,
Device ID is:

PCI\VEN_1002&DEV_4E45&SUBSYS_30021002&REV_00\4&6B9BF1C&0&0008

Thanks

Well, the closest match to that is VEN_1002&DEV_4E45, which, as far as I
can tell, are all R300s.

Basically your card is an R300 core (9700) and the drivers have matched
that. They don't kow the specific manufacturer or model, but it's close
enough. The latest driver is probably the best for your card, unless it
has weird (nonstandard) functionality that you have lost by going to
this driver.

If you really want it to be listed differently, find the

CX_21277.inf

And add

"My Cool Name" = ati2mtag_R300, PCI\VEN_1002&DEV_4E45&SUBSYS_30021002

(all on one line)

to the

[ATI.Mfg.NTx86]

Section. Won't make any difference, functionally though. There are
some "MEDION RADEON 9600 TX" listed as the same type as other 9600s, so
you probably haven't lost anything by using ATIs driver.

I have absolutely no idea why I was talking about X700 earlier, ignore me.
