Hi,

I bought a 9800 Pro today and my big problem is that my fps in games (for example Call of Duty) is lower than before (the previous graphics card is a Gef4 Ti4200). I have Catalyst 4.5 and Refreshforce 1.10 installed, I also tried catalyst 3.8. My comp is a 2400+ XP with 1G ram and CoD timedemo with bilinear filtering and everything else maximum is only 74 fps - it was 84 with the ti4200. Vsync is off. Help me please Im desperate 🙁

Really? Not even driver cleaner can help? Because to be honest, clean install is pain in the ass. Especially if he imaged his drive after installing vid card drivers. Then you have to do a REAL full install.

Got to do a full format and install if you want the best performance. Plus, remember your Gf4 was a goooood DX8 card, so in some older games it will keep pace with the 9800 pro. Youll be a lot happier come 6 months from now.

Ya get a copy of farcry and then compair your fps 9800 pro should do way better.

Just use Drivercleaner or something. YOud don't need to do a clean install, ignore these people. Just unintalling the Dets and NVRefresh still leaves garbage thtough that a tool like driver cleaner will get rid of

Most of the time, I have both ATi and nVidia graphics drivers on my system. I'm not one of the people who have problems doing that...

Did you install the motherboard's AGP drivers (GART) immediately after installing windows (and before installing the video drivers)?
It's a small step for men (when clean installing), but a giant leap for performance.

I dont have an AGP driver for my motherboard, the drivers on the CD which came with the MB are Audio, LAN, USB and VIA drivers. I tried google with agp driver for kd7 but didnt find anything worthy.

they should be contained in the so-called "VIA 4 in 1 driver"

yes, Ive installed those.
I tried the card today in my friends comp, and got the same results (more fps with ti4200)

My 3dmark03 score is 5300 i guess its not that low? I dont understand why games perform worse.

I noticed an interesting thing with CoD: I get the same results for timedemo if i raise resolution to 1280x1024 from 800x600 and even if I turn trilinear filtering on too... why could that be? (if I leave everything else on max its around 75 fps, with everything else on min its around 100 fps) I also tried maxing out anti-aliasing and anisotropic filtering in driver tools, but neither that resulted in lower fps in 800x600.

I guess this means this card could reach much higher fps in 800x600 and 1024x768 but how?

Could be that the game is CPU limited, don't know enough about CoD. If the graphics engine is very efficient then you'll see little difference in a graphics card upgrade because the game's speed is not limited by the graphics card (which is already faster than it needs to be for the game), but from the CPU calculating things like AI, stats, etc...

Yes you could have. If nVidia's drivers happen to be a little faster at that game (which is the case for OGL), and the game is CPU limited then you could see a higher score with a Ti4200 than a Radeon 9800 Pro. In any modern game turn on the AF and AA and you will see which card is faster.

Btw my friend in whos machine we tested the card has a 2800+ XP and we got the same results there... so it cant be a processor-limiting problem

I take it you do have Vertical Sync off right? Because If you don;t that would be the reason you see no change in fps between modes/resolutions.

Sorry in advance if you've said this somewhere else and I haven't read it!

Wow that's weird. Is there a place buried somewhere in the game's options menu that either limits the framerate or turns vsync on?

Did you try it while standing on your head and balancing the computer on your feet? Did you pray to the god in the power outlet before stabbing his eyes and mouth?

well there isnt really much else left to do...

One bit of advice is to avoid Cat 3.8 and 3.9 drivers. Stick to 3.10 or newer.
