Im wondering about Radeon 9800se. Its very cheap for a 9800 card. Is 9700pro better? does anyone have a link to some benchmarks for 9800se?
 
I have read benchmark...but it's not online..

there r 2 version..
one with 9700 PCB...another with it's own PCB...
the 9700 PCB r more expensive..and r usually eqiped with faster mem...(2.8 for most..)and 256bit mem
the other one is slower in mem speed...(3.3+) 128bit mem

they both only have 4/1 pipleling to texture unit..
For both card @ stock setting....
9600np < 9800se > 9600pro

the one with 9700 PCB can be modded to be a 9800np or 9800p...(it depends on ur luck..)
but both card can be modded to reactivate the missing pipleline...

the price for the 9700PCB version of 9800se about the price of a 9700...(this is based on HK price..)
the one with it's own PCB is about the price of 9500...

if u guys need detail benchmark..I can type it up for u...
 
Have you heard of those old 9500 Non-Pro cards that had a 256-bit memory interface? Very similar to the 9800SE.

You see, the SE is missing 4 rendering pipelines, just like the 9500 Non-Pro. And it has a 256-bit memory interface.

Those old 9500 Non-Pros (the original 128MB versions) could be software hacked into 9700 Non-Pro cards. Similarly, the 9800SE can likely be software-hacked into a 9800.

The problem of course with software hacking is, not all chips have the quality needed to work with all 8 pipelines enabled. Many of these types of chips had a defect which caused them to be down-binned.

The performance difference between a 9800 and 9800SE should be similar to that of the 9700 and 9500 Non-Pro 256-bit card. Which is VERY large and EXTREMELY noticable.

yes...thats right...
thouse 4 missing pipleline could easily boost 2000point in 3dmark01...

so it is a risk thing...but is it worth a shot? That usually the main question for many ppl....
the way that I see it is that if u a decent card @ stock...it is a risk worth taking...(9700np) due to the fact that even it doesn't work...u still get a decent card..
(yes yes...I know there is minial gain in softmodding a 9700np...but there is a differetn...just not much...)
 
Oh yes, if you discount the fact that the 9600 draws less power and produces less heat, you have the 9600 Pro and the 9800SE in the same performance league, given the specs I've read. So if the prices are similar, it would probably be worth the risk to go with the 9800SE and TRY to soft mod it, because you'd still have an OK card if the soft mod was no good for it.

I read a guys bench from Tweak town for the 9800se
13900 in 3Dmark 2001 and 4950 in 3Dmark 2003

Better than a 9600pro I would say.

I got one of these cards too, 13250 in 3Dmark2001se and 3700 in 3Dmark 2003, not as high as this guy claims but still no slouch, but I have been having trouble trying to get the latest drivers installed, for some reason it keeps coming up with the error "inf error no video driver found" so am working on that.

There is also the soft mod for the card that releases the the other 4 pipes, scored 14900 in 3Dmark2001 and 5200 in 3D mark 2003 on my rig but the artifacts were pretty bad.

So basically, since the 9800 is just a new stepping of the 9700 chip, with faster memory and clock speeds, the 9800SE is just a new stepping of the 9500 non-pro chip, with a 256-bit bus such as many early 9500 non-pro cards had?

Sorted the driver problem, just got the driver from the Sapphire website, installed no probs.
