Greetings:
Two weeks ago I bought a new 64 bit machine running a Radeon HD 4850 card which according to the Radeon web site supports DirectX 10.1 . My problem is when I try to open up Windows DVD maker and Movie Maker I get a message saying my card doesnt support direct x 9 and then the program closes. How does this make sense?
Please help me understand this, thank you.

Interesting, did you make sure DVD maker/Movie maker have been updated? Also if this doesnt work download the Dx 9 from microsoft and install it. It should keep your 10.1 version as well as add support for dx 9.... That is odd though. Have you installed the newest drivers for HD 4850, which are the 9.9 catalyst suite?

I agree, definitely a software issue.
My advice is basically the same as above:

1) uninstall and reinstall the latest Catalyst Suite for your version of Windows (9.10 is latest)

2) Get all Microsoft updates (but get your video drivers from ATI)

3) Try some game demos (they'll install software that may be missing)

4) If you have any onboard video, make sure it's the HD4850 that is being used.

Installing drivers from Windows Update is a bad idea. Today I did an update and it offered me 2 year old gigabit ethernet drivers and an nvidia driver that was 2 months old. If unsure how to get what you need sometimes it's ok but you're better off going to the manufacturers site for the latest stuff.
Agree with other stuff posted. But open up the device manager and try and do updates from there for the dvd-rom drive.
Also, when installing the video driver select advanced install and don't install the ati/amd sound drivers.

THANKS!

It looks as thought the conflict is with a USB 2.0 to VGA connection that I am using to run a second monitor.
I did a clean boot and discovered the issue with a file called MCT 5001 that is in my start-up routine. When disabled DVD maker works fine. Looks like I'll need to replace it with another video card.

Thaks for everyone's help!
