My Nvidia 8800 GTS XLR8 320mb died and now I'm looking to upgrade. I've found some gpu's on craigslist.com and it seems that someone has a RADEON HD 4850 for about $40 is it worth it to buy that? I bought a stupid 7950 gx2 and it seems that people say it doesn't support dx10 and 11 or something. I'm not much of a graphic card person but would like to play League of Legends and many other new games (doesn't have to be on ultra-high settings).

A 4850 slower than a 5670? I don't think so. A 4850 is significantly faster and for $40 it's a good deal. The 7950Gx2 isn't a bad card though. Considering alot of games still have a DX9 fall back you can play alot of them on that card. Of course, driver support isn't the best since it's so old.

You're not going to do better for under $75 than that used 4850 for $40. Just make sure it works right ^_^. You should see if that 7950GX2 isn't good enough for now before you go buying yet another card.

Well, the 7950 is from 2007 era, which is before DX10 came out, not very surprising it does not support it. Don't spend $40 on a used 3 yr old card either in the 4850.

Get a Radeon 5670, it's faster than the 4850 and is brand new for about $80. Or go up another $20-30 and get a 6770, as long as your system is a fast dual-core with about 3 gig of RAM.

Video cards are a risky buy on craigslist, if you can test it for a while, good, if not, don't buy off there.

Now how long would those cards last me? I dont plan to play bf3 or anything of that nature at high settings - just as long as the card can last me for about 3+ years again I would be happy. I would consider $75 (on a used) gpu that would last for 3 years (speaking about my 8800 gts) to be worth the money, unless anyone can convince me otherwise I would be happy to listen :).

What do you mean by last? Be relevant in playing games? The 6770 should be OK, better than the 5670, although both are pretty good for lower quality games.

If by last you mean run without breaking, who knows, any card should run over 3 years if kept clean and cooled OK, no-one can say for sure that something will run for a certain amount of time though. Buy a new card that has a 3 yr warranty and you should be set.

MSI and evga will warranty that long, probably others.

It seems that the 8800 gts was cooled as well as clean and yet it still died, I still dont understand why - but enough of that. I guess last for me would be to be able to keep up with some (not all) games that are not so graphic intense. I was able to play HoN as well as Modern Warfare 2 on the 8800 which was amazing. Even though it's not high setting, it was good and smooth. Is there anything under $75? The 6770 seems to be about $100+. I have read the "Best Graphic for the Money: December 2011" but it seems that the 5670 stands at the same level of GeForce 9800 GT (which is about 3 years ago as well).

What about $80 for an HD 6770? I have no problem searching on craigslist, so yea. $70 for the 5670 (which is 2 steps above my old 8800 gts 320mb? prices sure didn't change much for the last 3 years?)

I haven't found much support for the 7950gx2 and when there is, it's from 1-2 years ago. I'm running the latest driver from NVidia and for some reason the refresh rate for my Windows 7 desktop is not as smooth. I don't know if it's suppose to be like that or not but being 1 row below the old 8800 gts, I doubt there is that much differences in power. A lot of people had problems running the multi-gpu that they had to disable it, League of Legends being one of those that is glitchy with it, I had to disable the multi-gpu to run (even then it's very glitchy). Thank you for all who have contributed patiently :) I'm sure some of these questions were already asked before but I have tried to look before asking these. Since I'm looking for support on 7950 gx2 now, would it be better to make a new thread about it instead of being in this thread for the RADEON HD 4850?

I looked up the Mobility instead of the regular 4850, the Passmark rating is close to a 5670 but the 8450 is faster. It's also an issue of buying a used card, need to be able to test it, and there is no warranty. A new card will come with a 1-3+ yr warranty.

It seems to be working fine, using the latest 285.62 from Nvidia. Some how it's crashing my League of Legends left and right any idea? I guess the mod can merge the 7950 gx2 topic with the 4850 thread. (Sorry if I'm wrong and went off topic)

It's ok, problem solved - got a HD 4850 for $40. The guy threw in another 4850 as a "Christmas gift" :) Made my day. :) Merry Christmas guys/gals and thank you for all the help. Now I just need to get a better motherboard for the Crossfire :)

I tested one of them out - working perfectly, running everything I throw at it on high settings. Only bottleneck I got now is the CPU and Motherboard. Don't have the need or money to upgrade right now so I'll just leave it at that :) I got a good deal on it when it was 1 4850 for $40, the 2nd one was just icing on the cake and I love that I either have a backup for it or potential to have a 4th level setup of 4850 x2.

FYI: My 8800 GTS 320mb was also bought on Craigslist 3 years ago for $75. I guess I'm blessed like that :)

5870 level performance for $40?? now who can say old tech is bad..

I recently got a used 4850 for $70, not bad since here in Mexico even a 5670 costs 115 USD plus shipping.
Lucky me it had a thermaltake cooler installed so it runs @ 62c load instead of ~90c with the stock (single slot) cooler.

The 4800 series in general get very hot, if you plan on crossfiring you should have enough room for the cards to breathe and one or two case fans for air flow. And of course a good PSU that can deliver 110w to each card.
