Radeon HD 5770 power supply question

Hi,

I have a 500 watt MIOS Power Supply and I would like to install a new GPU Radeon HD 5770. I was wondering if the power supply could handle the load or not.

PC:
Core 2Duo 2.53Ghz
8GB RAM

looks like you really have about a 250watt psu half your power is on the 3.3 and 5v which barely get used anymore, it will probably work for a bit but i would definately be replacing it asap

The 5770 has a 108W TDP. Your PSU has 144W on the 12V NOT 500W. For the entire system.

I can not stress this enough. I would not run ANY system with that PSU. Let alone add parts to it. It should be replaced immediately

Any recommendation of any PSU to make this system work great. Once the new video card added, no more pieces will get added since I'm quite at its limit for a core 2 Duo.

Corsair is a good brand with some cheaper units

Note 430W "continuous" vs yours being "peak" and 380W of that are on the 12V rail.

OCZ, antec are also ok. Seasonic is great but more expensive.

A solid manufacture with 24A or ~300W on the 12V should be fine. Googling for professional reviews of a PSU your looking at is the easy way to check

Do you have the HD5770 already?

*I just bought that Corsair model and there was a fan ticking noise. As I was investigating that it blew up on me!

I don't think all PSU's have a P4 connector. This one does:

It says "1 x 8 / 4-Pin EPS / ATX 12V connector" which is an 8-pin that splits into two. You then use the 4-pin for your P4 CPU connector.

Summary:
- HD7770 if buying (free game)
- Corsair CX430 blew up on me
- verify P4 compatibility on PSU

Any PSU sold today should have a 4 pin or 4/8pin, but even a solid 8 pin fits in a 4 pin socket. Certainly doesn't hurt to check though

That corsair also has numerous awards. Any component CAN have a bad one slip out occasionally. Wouldn't really worry me. Especially if it's protection circuits worked and it's the only thing that went?

I wasn't recommending the Silverstone necessarily, I was just using it as a reference to discuss the P4 connector. I know any PSU can fail but when I started Googling I saw several people with the same issue:

Thanks everyone one. Actually I got the 7550 for 40$ and its only for doing dual screen not any gaming at all .

I simply didn't want to try the card in the pc before asking and it sure was a good thing I did. Its to replace a Dell Inspiron 518. I dont the the psu installed is the OEM but god knows which make that is. I'll go see a store today and figure which PSU would be good enough for me. Either Master cooler, Cosair or something else.

May I ask, would you guys recommend any specific number of wattage?

500watts? 600watts?

What is your concern?

There is sufficient power and there appears to be a P4 connector for the CPU.

Well I read some reviews on it that they do not provide great power. Its not 80 plus either so is that a concern? I have also read that these PSU are noisy.

80 PLUS refers to how efficient it is. For example, if it's 82% efficient when you draw a certain amount of power then the PC burns 82% of the power and the PSU itself consumes 18% of the power.

If the PSU isn't 80 PLUS it's probably pretty close, so that's really no big deal.

User comments seem like it might have both fan issues and might die, but then my Corsair CX430 got good reviews and it blew up on me.

You've got the same information I have. If you use it you'll have a Warranty, so I guess you'll have to decide.

I think you made a good choice. I have the TX750 and its been basically silent and the voltages have never been out of tolerance.

Re: Fan Noise
The graph for fan speed shows that the fan stays at the LOWEST speed (quiet) until 50% load (about 300 Watts) and ramps up. You should stay under 50% under load so the fan won't increase.

(This is the reason I always recommend people buy PSU's to be TWICE the full load usage.)
