Radeon HD 6950 or Geforce GTX750ti?

Hello everyone,

My friend want buy a budget pc. For the gpu, he aim Asus strix gtx750ti which the price in our local shop RM669(183USD) brand new. Then he found in our local website someone want to sell their used gpu Powercolor radeon hd 6950 1gb ddr5 with RM165(45USD). Well i checked in tomshardware gpu chart gtx750ti and radeon hd 6950 within same category. My question is,which card he should buy?is it ok spend a little to buy about 2 years old GPU if the performance is same?or is it worth purchase the new card?

His pc spec :
i3 4150
gigabyte H81m gaming
1x4gb hyperx 1600mhz
aerocool strike x 600w 80plus bronze
thermaltake versa h23 casing
monitor resolution 1366x768

He want to play battlefield 3&4,all COD games,assassins creed 3 and above, and etc with medium and high setting if can. Thanks for all help

750ti is fine for medium settings in those games and will run a lot cooler and more quietly with much better energy efficiency than the 6950. However if buying now my recommendation would be the more power R9 270X. It will last you a lot longer before you need an upgrade as it handles all games on medium settings just fine.

Also you are better off getting a brand new card than a three year old one that has already used up half its life span.

performance wise 750Ti should be faster. but at such low price that 6950 will be a tempting choice. but then again the power supply probably not good enough for it. that Aerocool Strike X is a tier 4 PSU according to this list:

also 6950 is quite old. AMD probably going to drop 5k and 6k series from the main driver by the time win 10 arrives.

I completely disagree in this case. Get the 6950.

If the cards were similarly priced, I would agree with you, but he can get the 6950 for $45, while the 750ti costs over $180. I'm betting the 260X (the current AMD equivalent card) would cost around $180 as well.

THe 6950 uses 150w under load. Even that PSU will do fine. AMD uses a unified catalyst driver, you can still receive updates.

The 6950 will even support most of DX12 (Microsoft announced that all 11.1 cards will support most features of DX12).

At that price, as long as the 6950 works, this is a no brainer to me. Make sure the seller shows you the card running a heavy benchmark, such as uningine or a demanding game.

Oh sorry. I thought they were similarly priced. I only saw the price tags when you all mentioned them. Yes, try the 6950.

Thanks for quick reply. Yes, the owner who want to sell 6950 seldom use that GPU. Still in good condition. Well if you all said try 6950, how about its performance for games that my friend want to play?can get steady at least 30fps for all the game in medium or high setting in HD resolution?

Should be fine for Battlefield and COD. Assassin's Creed 4 should be fine too. However don't attempt Assassin's Creed: Unity. That game is still a mess of terrible optimization for anything less than a GTX 970..
