Radeon HD 7850 issues

Hi,
I bought an XFX Radeon HD 7850 (1 Gb) graphics card but my system refuses to recognise it. I've updated to the latest motherboard BIOS and I did ensure that the PSU 6-pin connector was plugged into the card. When I power on the PC the PC beeps once then 8 beeps a short while later. Screen stays blank throughout and I did ensure that the video selection in the BIOS was set to PCIE. I've reseated the card several times but it's still the same. I've also checked all cable connections several times. I also tried the card in an older Asus AM2 (AMD) motherboard with the same result but the card has been working fine for days now in my wife's older i7 PC. My old graphics card works fine in my PC afterwards too. This has my stumped me and leads me to the conclusion that there are no faults either with the Radeon card nor my motherboard but there must be some sort of incompatibility.
My setup is:
Asrock 960GM/U3S3 FX motherboard
AMD 6300 FX cpu
8GB PC2-12800 DDR3 RAM (2 x 4GB)
Antec VP650P PSU (650W)
XFX Radeon HD 7850 (1GB) graphics (not working on PC) / Gigabyte GT240 (1GB) graphics (working).

Any ideas would be appreciated.

have you checked to see if the xfx vendor dropped any firmware updates. if not it could be the card is pulling to much voltage at power up that your amd mb dont like the card. (there been a few vendors that have tweeked the power input of there gpu to lock the cards into higher over clock) when they did this a lot of the cards caused motherboard not to post.
(660/66ti from a few vendors were caught by nvidia for over volting). I would try another brand of the same gpu or try another gpu (nvidia) that already working in your rig.

Thanks for your suggestion - I'm trying to have a look at the XFX website (not very easy to find drivers/firmware updates) and I did email last Thursday evening (still awaiting a response).
If I went for a card that didn't require a PSU connection (like the Radeon 7750), would I be less likely to have the problem that I'm having with the 7850?
