Radeon HD 7970 Ghz vs GTX 770

I am stuck between these two cards for my first PC build. 7970 ghz is about 50 dollars cheaper and comes with 3-4 games I believe. I don't know much about GTX 770 though, but it seems it's as good as 7970, if not better.

It depends if you want the games really. They are both good graphics cards. The GTX 770 gets higher frame rates in games on fairly new drivers so who knows if they'll improve with new ones. THe 7970 has been out a while so they've had time to optimise that one I guess.

I went for the GTX 770 because I've always trusted nVidia and also shadowplay will be (hopefully) out soon. PhysX doesn't make that much difference as most games don't support it.

GTX770 = GTX680.

The 7970GHz is faster than the 680.

If you don't have the games then buy the 7970 (or sell it)

If you are planning on running multiple monitors or "3D" then buy the GTX770

HD7970, It is a lot cheaper than GTX770.
The logic is simple, deduct the prices of the games from the the original price and you will see the real price of the HD7970.
It does not need an genius to do this logical calculation.

Yesterday, I was in your situation. I went with the GTX 770 because of the exclusive nvidia features such as upcoming shadowplay, geforce experience, and gpu-accelerated physx. + If you OC one of the custom cards(such as the MSI ones or the ASUS ones) you can get performance better than a 7970 GHZ. Me, personally, I'm saving up for an ASUS 770 right now.

The 770 sort of is the 680 but it sort of isn't. If it was purely just a 680 they wouldn't have released it as a 770. It has faster memory for one (7GHz vs 6GHz) which gives it a higher bandwidth and a few other tweaks.

The benchmarks I've seen show that the 7970 GHZ isn't as fast as the 770 95% of the time, and also isn't as fast as the 680 most of the time for that matter.

It can also depend what resolution you are playing at. The higher memory of the 7970 can help that out but even in higher resolutions its not consistently beating the 770.

Either one is a good buy and I don't think you can really go wrong.

I found one of the best comparisons between the 2 cards (amongst several others) in the review charts over at Techpowerup.

As the guys say, the 770 is only slightly better overall - so if the 7970 is $50 less & comes with 3-4 games, the latter surely represents much better value for money.

So annoying how the 7970 Ghz Edition is still getting advised over a 770. 770 beats it at 1080p. If you play games at massive resolutions (over 90% of gamers do not), or use 3 monitors, a 7970 Ghz would work best. Most of the time, a 770 is 110% the better choice. You get PhysX, it's brand new, so--like someone said--there will be new drivers which will boost performane even more. As soon as the 7990 comes out, I will be recommending that, probably, as I always recommend the best card at the time. 99% of Tom's Hardware forum members are fanboys either way. People need to be more real about their reasoning.

The 7990 has been out for ages, overpriced and underperforming but its been around for quite some time.

Another myth that needs to die. 2GB of RAM is more than enough! You do not need 3GB of RAM unless you are running mahoosive resolutions across three monitors. There is 0% benefit to 3GB--it's a marketing con (as it's relatively cheap).
