Hello, guys!today I got a new laptop, the Dell Inspiron 3537, which has dual core haswell Core i7 4500U processor, powerful AMD Radeon HD 8850M w/ 2GB GDDR5, 8GB DDR RAM, 1 TB HDD.
So, 8850M has 575MHz base core clock, and the 8870M has 725MHz.
Could I just overclock my 8850M to a level of 8870M? Could I see any performance increase? How this overclocking will affect on the temperature? Which cooling pad should I get?
P.S. Radeon 8850M and the Radeon 8870M are the same videocards, but there's a difference between core clocks
Thanks!

Hi Suliq,
I got the same laptop as yours and I've overclocked my card. :D I'm running at 800Mhz core clock and its running absolutely fine. Even after hours of playing Grid 2 at ultra settings the temp hovers around 75 C.Check this out: http://www.techpowerup.com/gpuz/9u8df/

Yeah, you can OC without any major issues, that's because the 8850M GDDR5 is an underclocked 8870M, you just need to pay attention for temperature, which will be a bit higher, but stil safe and stable if you provide sufficient cooling.

I have an Inspiron 15R-5537 with the same specs, and I was able to OC the core to 725 MHz and the memory to 1125 MHz, and the temperature keeps below 65 ºC, and it has been working fine this way for the past 6 months wthout a single issue. You just need some tweaking with MSI Afterburner and Speedfan, it's a bit of work but worths the trouble. If you want to do this, send me a PM, but be advised I'm not responsible for anything wrong which could happen to your laptop, even though it's really unlikely to happen.

@chiku181 The maximum clock I can set on core is 750 MHz, but it isn't 100% stable unlike 725 MHz. Sometimes the screen freezes and I have to alt+tab when gaming, and I have to alt+tab again to resume. Anything higher than 750 MHz doesn't work, the game freezes and I a message pops up saying the driver has stopped worked, and it will only work when reverting to 750 MHz or lower. And I really, really wouldn't recommend setting 800 MHz on the core and 1400 MHz on memory, this might damage the GPU on long term.

I want to overclock my inspiron 3537. how did you do that? because when I run my GPU-z I only get 300Mhz GPU core clock, and 150MHz GPU memory clock. I don't get any result from the fan speed and Fan speed (RPM). why is that?

You see those low clocks because of power saving features (AMD PowerPlay), as the system is idle or the GPU isn't needed much, so clocks and PCI-E bandwidth is lowered and iGPU is used instead to conserve battery and reduce heat output.

Howerver, if you perform the render test to take the GPU to max perfomance state, you'll see that the clocks will almost immediately raise to 625 MHz on core and 1000 MHz on memory, these are the stock clocks.

It's really easy to OC this Radeon HD 8850M GDDR5 and basically turn it into an 8870M, just requires a bit work. I'll send you a tutorial via PM later, with a list of the required applications, files and tweaks, just wait a little because I've been a bit busy lately.

Heaps of thanks man! I tried some applications like GPU clock tool but it say something linke " no device detected" not so sure but it just dont work, or maybe, I just dont know how to use, this is my first time to OC, havent done it before. I alsa installed MSI afterburner, tried to increase some Mhz and after that I installed GPU-z to test, still, shows 300MHz.. and oh, I got a dell 3537 i7 intel 4500 8850M GDDR5. windows 8 currently installed, but im going to update it to 8.1 later.

OK, so after promises and more promises, I'll show how to OC and turn it into an 8870m :). Here we go:

1-Download and install the latest MSI Aterburner software:

http://download.msi.com/uti_exe/vga/MSIAfterburnerSetup300Beta19.zip

2-Download atiocdll.zip which contains the required libraries and MSIAfterburner.cfg (don't worry, these files are 100% clean):

https://mega.co.nz/#!2cUllKyI!jTT03nLL5-1qvXK5xr3kxfdpKyIPqjkSlKF56FEJ6lw

https://mega.co.nz/#!yFs0jLCJ!lp6WJBDy2-g6GEJmQ-sbb9-vNzmpp9C7G6IIG1tu564

3-After installing MSI afterburner, open the application and then close it. Then go to the installation folder (usually "C:\Program Files (x86)\MSI Afterburner") and then replace the MSIAfterburner.cfg file already existing there with the one I posted, you'll be asked to confirm the overwriting, accept it. Also copy the .cfg file into Profiles folder and accept overwriting if prompted.

3-Download and extract atiocdll.zip. There are two DLLs, "atipdl64.dll", which you must place in C:\Windows\System32, and "atipdlxx.dll", which you have to move to C:\Windows\SysWOW64.

4-Now go to Registry Editor (regedit from Run command) and seek this folder:

HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SYSTEM\ControlSet001\Control\Class\{4d36e968-e325-11ce-bfc1-08002be10318}\0000

Open it, search for "EnableCrossFireAutoLink", "EnableUlps" and "EnableUlps_NA" keys and set their values as 0.

5-Reboot. When you open MSI Afterburner, you'll see that Core Clock and Memory Clock sliders are now unlocked, so is the "Max" box, so you can just directly type a numeric value instead of dragging sliders. I recommend setting 725 MHz on Core (750 also works, but it's not 100% stable, anything higer than that isn't), and 1125 MHz on Memory, these are safe clocks.

Don't worry about higher clocks, as they will lowered to 150 MHz (core) and 300 MHz (Memory) when the GPU is idle, but will revert back to higher levels when it's needed, like when gaming.

6-I really recommended installing Catalyst 14.4 WHQL modded by a guy on guru3D forums, because it increases perfomance in systems with Switchable Dynamic Graphics (Enduro) as used by Dell Inspiron 15R laptops, and also on DX9 games. I can post the link and another tutorial on how to install it in another occasion.

7-Enjoy :), any doubt you have, feel free to contact me here or via PM.

Glad to know it worked! As I said, it's a very easy and safe procedure. About the modded Catalyst, here is the link:

http://

I recommend installing OEM Intel HD Graphics provided by Dell before installing this modded Catalyst. And you should always use Display Driver Uninstaller to clean any traces of previous drivers when performing new installation of Catalyst software.

Have fun with your new 8870M ;)

Thanks for the tutorial, i followed it and it really works! But i noticed that now the radeon is always on, which of these configs should i change in order to only turn on the radeon when i launch a game, and use intel otherwise?

Hello. I used same Dell 15R 5537 i7. About the 3keys in the regedit, Icant find it in HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SYSTEM\ControlSet001\Control\Class\{4d36e968-e325-11ce-bfc1-08002be10318}\0000
but I do found it in HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SYSTEM\ControlSet001\Control\Class\{4d36e968-e325-11ce-bfc1-08002be10318}\0001
. Should I change the keys in 0001 instead of 0000? Im afraid if i choose different folder would mess up my laptop. Thanks

You're right, these keys are in \0001 folder, not \0000. I corrected the OP, thanks. Just change those three keys I mentioned before and reboot, and then you'll be able to freely drag the sliders representing core and memory clock, or just type them in the boxes, save the profile and hit apply.

i did all by tutorial. but i have high tempurature 85+ degree on watch dogs

That's pretty high, currently, I never reach more than 65 ºC (both GPU/CPU) with OC, even after several hours gaming, and that's because I live in a tropical country. I have some hints that I believe will help lower the temperatures:

1) Don't play with battery plugged in; only with charger/power brick connected;

2) Play games only at night when temperature drops. I live in a tropical country, however, as I live near the beach, temperature drops to around 25-26 ºC at night, and that helps a lot. If you live in a country with temperare climate like the US, it won't have much difference, unless it's southern Florida, which I believe has a tropical climate.

3) Play in a room with air conditioner, or at least place one of those big 40-cm blades fans towards the heat exhaustion output (seems useless, but that helps a little). Also place the notebook in a ventilated room, like your desk near the window.

4) Replace the thermal paste, because the one that Dell ships with is really cheap. It's a gray material, most likely thermal conductive elastomer, but it completely dries up with age, and does not conduct heat very well after some time, leading to high temperatures in full load, both CPU and GPU. Last time I used Akasa-450 silver-based thermal paste, and it dropped incredible 10 ºC on GPU die temperature and around 15 ºC in CPU, in full load, measured by Speedfan.

5) Clean the fan if you think there's too much dust. Always keep your nootebook inside your backpack or any closed place after using it as well, because letting it exposed to open air will make the dust collect very fast. By keeping it back in my backpack after using it, the dust takes much longer to accumulate. To me, that's almost obligatory, because I live near the beach and the sea spray would quickly oxidize metal parts if I didn't do that.

6) Install speedfan and set the cooler speed at 100%, and you'll see the temperatures drop almost immediately.

Good luck!

Hello @Ksio thank you for the tutorial worked for me fine got the same computer
but have some questions I am using latest amd beta driver with enduro fix is this good or do you recommand something else I found many moded drivers the one you mentioned and unifl(which does not require enduro fix)
what are you using?

I recommend installing the latest Catalyst 14.12 Omega WHQL Switchable Graphics (SG) modded:

http://mahmoudelfar.blogspot.com.br/2014/12/modded-catalyst-1412-omega-driver.html

Scroll down on that page to find the download link at the bottom. You don't need Enduro Fix with that Catalyst driver package. It's a modified Catalyst which solves seveal bugs like power state issues, and also increases perfomance in several games if compared with official Catalyst.

Read the tutorial on that page. Perform a full wipe with Display Driver Uninstaller, both Catalyst and Intel HD Graphics. then reboot. Then install OEM Intel HD Graphics provided by Dell, reboot and disable force driver signature and only then install the Catalyst provided in the link.

Also remember to thank the guy, because we would be screwed without him due to terrible AMD driver support.

The R9 M265X is just a rebranded HD 8850M; It's exactly the same GPU except for supporting newer versions of Direct3D/OpenGL. They share the same device ID so that's why the 8850M is detected as R9 M265X. The 8870M is now rebranded as R9 M270.
