Radeon LE to Radeon Hack

ATI has released a budget version of "Radeon" card named "Radeon LE" (Fig. 1) to the retail market recently. Besides the speed differences of video core and memory, the main difference between Radeon and Radeon LE is that the feature of ATI HyperZ, which claims can boost the effective memory bandwidth by 20%, on Radeon is disabled on Radeon LE (Table 1). However, the Radeon LE can be hacked to a Radeon by a registry editing and thus unlocked the disabled HyperZ feacture on Radeon LE. The performance gain of Radeon LE after hacking is showed on Fig. 2.

Appears that the LE version of the Radeon is made by an outside manufacturer other than ATI.

Notice that ATI does not mention it anywhere on there site. Even the VE is advertised now which has just now been released. Also with the above link, scroll up and you see a new recommended price listing for ATI products. Many are reporting good success with the LE Radeons. Maybe someone will get lucky and get one with 5ns ram installed on it.
