I was wondering, when i asked ATi what the differance was between the PC cards and the Mac cards were they responded with
The cards are manufactured for the specific systems and are not interchangeable.
The cards are made for the specific systems with different specs.
I figured this might be the case for your typical user, but realy is there a way to mod them from one to another?

the Mac cards a far more expencive, apperently the "specs" are diffent. if so, i wonder if one is better then another...i highly doubt that, but you never know...they are making it for the G5's which are ultra cooled.

Anyhow, so is there a way to get the PC ones in to a MAC or if te MAc ones are better(doubtfully) is there a way to get one in a PC?

Rememebr that often the APPLE ATI cards come with that specialized Apple ADC connector. So that makes it more than a matter of drivers only. And so it impacts greatly on the supply/demand issues. This special run is like Linux, it gets attention but mainly for the PR of it all. I doubt that even with the higher prices that ATI is recouping their costs for the Apple-centric products. At least linux is only a software issue.

Personally I'd blame Apple for the way they make generic PC parts incompatible with their products.

I too balme apple. they are twits as far as im concered.

But as always i was looking to see if it were possible to cheat them some how. i didn't stop to think of the ADC connector...

from what i recall ADC might accully not be hanging around for too much longer. so if that is the only thing making this not possible, then perhaps eventually we'll see both cards as the same?

That could be the case. I know there are ADC to DVI and DVI to ADC adapters out there, but of course you lose all the computer to Monitor communication channels that are necessary to adjust settings on monitors like the Cinema HD Series.

I think DVI is the way of the future even for Apple, people simply want the flexibility with their monitor without having to get dongle/adapters.

Hopefully that would change. I think that would benifit both the companies like ATI, and the Apple users, like my dad (a longtime IBM emplyee, go figure).

I have some Apple-loving friends... yeah, I know.. I almost killed myself one day when I thought about it. But I went to therapy and im OK now.

Anyways through them I've learned of the difference. The BIOS. (And maybe the monitor output, as you say it has ADC? I thought it had DVI, maybe it has both.) It's popular in the mac community to buy a pc card and flash it's bios so it'll work with their macs:) My friend has contemplated doing this.

Me: are you saying I can't provide?
Me: cause I know I can provide.
Me: oh and I can provide money too;)
Rachel:): why do we need money when we can just stay in our room and have sex all day?

so it is possible, ppl just flash the bois and thats enough?

Yea the ADC (apple display connector, i think).. i think its accually so that you only need the one cable to the monitor, reather then a power cable too... Less clutter.
Clutter-free.
Simplifies setup and eliminates clutter with the convenient single-connection Apple Display Connector
and it looks like this is how it can be done
Support for ADC, DVI and VGA
Each graphics card options comes standard with both an ADC and DVI port allowing both ADC and DVI based flat panel to directly connect. VGA based monitors attach to the DVI port via the included DVI to VGA adapter.
so if i were to install a PC card, Flash it, i can use the VGA and DVI outs with out having to buy and extra dongle(more savings)

Great so where can one find out how to flash the bios and where to get the bios?

I nearly bought a Radeon PCI a few years ago for $30 because it was the MAC version, with VGA outputs, and a company was liquidating them. It was just a BIOS thing.

hmm.

ok so where can i find the Bios? I just wrote into ATi support to see if i can get it from them some how.

think they'll go for it...

if they respond with a no, i'll just say its ok, that we had an nVidia solution already, and that we just hoped to support ATi instead. woulda been a big purchace, oh well.

WOW they responded quite fast.
Dear chris page,

Thank you for contacting ATI Customer Care Canada.

Regarding Mac and PC interchange:

The cards are different and will not work. It is more than just the BIOS.

and you believe him? whoever said techs know what they are talking about.

now featuring (optional) cheating death!

Even more importantly, why would they telly you how to make a $250 card into the one they sell for $500?

It would be like ATI telling people about the R9500->9700 mod.

Just because they say it's more doesn't mean it's not possible, but it does mean they won't help you further.

:p

well i sent them a message, along the lines of ATi and Apple and Apple consumers beniting from the a change. I suggested that they do what they can to influnce Apple to Keep the PCI-Express the Same.

this was his responce.

Regarding Apple:

I agree and will pass it up. Apple is the one that configures the AGP on a Mac
to be slightly different and we have to make the cards different to comply.
With the card being AGP, PCI or the new PCI Express you would think it would be
the same. Because to us it would mean the Apple consumer could benefit from the
larger PC production runs. But it hasn't been true yet so we will have to wait
and see about PCI Express. If you keep pounding it in they eventually learn.

LOL! There's a few that I'll kill, but there's one who I'm in the process of converting. Those which are seen as possible converts, train them in the proper ways. Those which are not seen as possible converts... murder them before they spread their wicked ideas!
