Radeon R9 290 overkill?

yes it is. For 1080p gaming r9 280x is the sweet spot max out settings in full hd with single display. But lately the price of 290 went down almost same price as 280x. So if the price remains that way, better get the r9 290

You obviously don't know what you're talking about. An R9 290 isn't overkill at all and is pretty much what is required at the moment to be able to max out big titles. I know because I own that card. Overkill would be having 2 of those cards or 2 GTX 970s.

To OP, if you can afford it the 970 is the ideal choice. The R9 290 is very powerful aswell but it runs louder and hotter and is also less efficient. So it's something to consider if those are important factors for you. Either way, you're good with a R9 290 and it isn't overkill.

You maybe right i don't own r9 290 but I'm gaming with r9 270x and I'm maxing out far cry 4, metro ll, crysis 2/3 bf4 ultra settings with some adjustment in AA in 1080p. So are you trying to downgrade your gpu by saying that 290 is for 1080p gaming. Your card is more capable than that. A r9 280x is just right for 1080p

Yeah for current games, but what about upcoming titles? Some people seem to forget that games get more and more demanding all the time it seems, lol. Games are also starting to use more and more vram as well, so that extra gb of ram could also help in the future. I would guess that the card might be overkill for about 6 months 😉 .

You can't run everything maxed out with a R9 270x smoothly. Not without adjustments AND low FPS.

There is no such thing as the R9 280x being "just right". If so, the R9 290 is better suited for that title. You do realise that the recommended requirements for most big titles right now is the R9 290 right? I don't think you understand the definition of overkill.

- are you blind? didn't you see my reply? i said with some adjustment. Im getting 40+ fps average. To let you know, 40 fps to 60 fps are all numbers. Human eye have a hard time telling the difference once it pass 45 fps.

look at this thread a year back. I know its year back but since then, only handful of demanding games was released:

And don't lecture me like you sound like bill gates, you smart A@@

There is a huge difference between having something that is good and having something that is overkill. The R9 290 is something that is required to max out all games at the moment whether you like it or not. And if you have to base your opinion on another thread to give advice, your probably not the best person to be giving advice.

I'm not lecturing you, i'm speaking from experience. I own the same card, you do not.

OP asked if the card is overkill. The answer is NO. There is nothing else to say.

Well obviously this guy is just mad that his card isn't up to par anymore. The fact that you have nothing to reply to my last post just further proves my point. You have no clue what the hell you are talking about and don't seem to comprehend what the term overkill means. And who are you to judge which feedback is more reliable when you clearly can't form an opinion of your own. By the way, that thread is 1 year old and is also about the 290x which is a slight notch over the 290. Either way, it doesn't change anything to what i just said.

To OP, an R9 290 is not overkill. I own the card and I can confirm everything I just said in this thread. Just check the recommended requirements for the latest games and see for yourself. I just can't stand people giving advice when they no clue what they are talking about.

hehe can't you see I'm happy gaming with my r9 270x and for your info, i advised op to get 290 for the recent price drop but still overkill for 1080p. I already told you my reason and read other RELIABLE MEMBERS opinion and its up to you to believe yourself

You are just speculating and have proved multiple times that you do not know what you are talking about. Overkill would be a card capable of maxing out all games in a good year from now. What you don't understand is that right now to be able to experience every game fully, something like an R9 290 is needed. It's just how it is.

Just check an example of the recommended requirements for some recent games out right now. That's not even mentionning other big titles and ones set to be released really soon.

Far Cry 4: GTX 680 or R9 290x
Assassins Creed: Unity: GTX 780 or R9 290x
Dying Light: GTX 780 or R9 290

So no, an R9 290 is not overkill at all. If you call a card able to run a game at it's full potentiel overkill, you should educate yourself on what that word means.
