Radeon R9 380X Vs. 290 w/ DX12

The question has been asked before, most people recommend the 380X because it runs cooler and can use DX12 w/ windows but the SAPPHIRE card I'm looking at (290) can run DX12.

Which one is better and why? I'll be making the purchase soon so replies ASAP are welcome and appreciated

The 290 is ~20-25% faster, however I wouldnt touch a reference card unless you replace that cooler

reference cards are load and run hot. if you dont care about sound the r9 290 is the way too go as it is significantly faster

Thanks for the reply Gam3r01 and cdabc123.

So you're saying I should go with the 380X? My computer's ventilation is great, it's right next to an AC unit and has multiple fans/watercooled.
I think I'll go with the 290 just because I want faster speed, noise isn't a huge deal as I use a headset to game and I live alone.

The thing gets LOUD, but if you crank the speeds up it should be ok (depending on airflow).
If it still runs too hot for you, look at the ARctic Acellero Xtreme III

you can always switch the cooler later. personally the r9 380x isnt a fast enough card for good gaming. If you where a headset i would go with the 290 or spend a bit more and get a non reference 290

Super excited. This was the last of my build I needed to purchase. The 290 is a huge card from what I've seen in videos, I'll have to make sure I have enough room for both the card and cooler in my case but It's a big case so it should fit. Thanks again.

if its within your budget you could get a 290x with a stock cooler from sapphire it will preform better then a 290
