Radeon X600Pro Vs. Nvidia 7300SE/7200GS

Hi,

My friend gave me a few PC's that he had laying around, and he asked me to combine all the best bits into one so he can use it for day 2 day use.

I've completed the PC it's just boiled down the the GPU, I'm pretty confused. Both the GPU's are PCI-e but which is better? I couldn't find anything on either card performance wise.

1) Radeon X600Pro 256MB
2) Nvidia 7300SE/7200GS

Hi'll be picking up the PC tonight, so all the feedback I can get is much appriciated.

Here's the thing, they both kinda suck, and the X600 is slightly faster, but the GF7300 will let you play (at low settings) some games the X600 won't simply because you will have access to the SM3.0 library, although you may not get all features mis-associated with it since some things like FP filtering are not SM 3.0 but are found on most SM3.0 cards, so you might not be able to enable HDR in games that require it, but that's ok because it's not powerful enough to use it anyways.

Also the GF7300 has slightly improved media acceleration engine over the older one on the X600 (which is essentially a radeon 9600 on a PCIe connection).

Anywhoo, they're both crap, but the GF7300/7200 is slightly less limiting and less aged crap. 😉

For games 2005 and older, the X600 would be better. Not only is the X600 older, but it's also IDENTICAL to the 9600 except that it's revised to work with PCI Express instead of AGP. I had a 9600 non-pro in my very first PC build which was used to play Need for Speed Underground 1 from 2003. That's how old that card is.
Geforce 7 series was new back in 2006, and the 7200 is the lowest end of those cards. It still doesn't support DirectX10, but if this is for day-to-day use, and not for any games whatsoever, the Geforce is going to support Aero and the Radeon is not. Gaming performance is non-existant on both cards.

The X600 will support Aero, which only requires PS2.0 support not 3.0, and has more than enough VRAM for the job.

So fellas... Which is it? There both sitting in my hand whilst the owner is useing onbuilt video memory which can't even browse HD youtube videos without lagging the hell out.

I guess hill play mild games like Sims and AoE etc, but nothing intense. This is of course intill he gets an upgrade in a few months.

The guy just asked me again, so I'm kinda stuck up... X600 Pro or 7200GS?

Go with the X600 Pro and be done with it. They're both low performance video cards and he won't be able to tell the difference between them unless he runs benchmarks.

GF7200GS is less limiting, and neither will be a 'good gamer', so just go with the one that lets you access more (games, media playback) even if it's only at the lowest settings.

Aww, you both confusing me again 😀 As I said, its not going to play intense games, just low 3D games like AoE etc. (suprisingly, I tested out the X600 Pro and the 7200GS on CoD4 - Modern Warfare, and I was getting 30FPS on low settings. Pretty impressive for crappy cards.)

Damn, I'm so confused. Every KB I can sqeeze out at the end of the build is a gain I guess.

Now by having you, the professionals of graphics cards, which is the better card? Some fetures on each card are higher or lower then each other. But which is more imoportant?

I don't need the specs, I know them like the back of my hand, had an R9600 (which is the same as the X600), X700, and a GF7300 in one of my work rigs, the GF7200/7300 just has less limitations, the X600 is slightly more powerful for some games, but overall the limits of the X600 outweight it's speed benefit in older games.

ie, use the GF7xxx series in the build.

In other words, if he's a gamer, use the 7200GS. If not, use the X600 Pro.

Actually, regardless of if he's a gamer, the GF7200GS will do everything 2D fine, and will also give him a better video procesor as well being able to handle 720P MPEG & H.264 content OK, and then just add the SM3.0 support on top of that.

I like the X600, but really it's aging, it's becoming more limited as time goes on.

I have a GF7350 in the garage. The crap update, post these more often. Not only does it have me ROFL, now I know why the kid gave it to me at no charge when I replaced it with one my 3870's. :lol:

Funny thing is I'm now looking for a 'quality' PCI card for my laptop docking station because I have a full useable PCI slot one now, it's hillarious looking at the same power for about $100.

Cost-effective Crap Update. My Radeon 3450 in Crossfire with onboard 3200. If you're asking does cutting edge Xfire technology justify the need for such power viewing streaming video where it is most effective? Even at $39.99? NUHN-UNHHH.

Yeah, I just need the card to add another 1-2 monitors to my desktop, and to let me finally go back to pushing full res on 2 IBM P260s because the integrated RAMDACs on the GMA 3xxx series are only about 300Mhz so won't push 1920x1440@60+ hz can only do 1920x1200 @ 54hz, and even then they tend to get confusing and start moving around the desktop as if it's an unsupported res (requires resetting in control panel).

Anywhoo, oh well, $150 for a Matrox G550, $300 for a Matrox P690; or else about $100 for HD2400 , GF8400 or GF9400/9500.

As much as I want that Matrox P690 (or $480+ for the P690 Plus LP), I think the ATi & nV cards will do just fine. Also if I spent $300 let alone $480 on a PCI card, I think GW would come back and punch me in the head !!

Well, I have an old very heavy Viewsonic 19-21" (not sure) V90/92? (I think) CRT. It's sitting on the desk behind me. I wouldn't dare try an move it. Yeah, 300-$480 for a PCI card is awesome thinking. It's like a down payment for a new Toyota 4x. I was thinking of updating all my C2D/Q's to i7/i5, but I'm contemplating a Koss headphone at 100ohm for freaking $29.99. I can't wait to see the difference 32 to 100ohm makes. I guess I'll put off upgrading my systems till like pre death.

Xentera is port PCI? How do it do it? What kind of the connectors are those 8 ports? Never seen it before. I would check this out, but my laptop is in a storage box unassembled for good. The HD became a 2.5 usb external. I have a lot of machine screws and DDR laptop RAM now. The AMD 64 3200 2.0GHz. Mobile processor works in my desktop socket 754 MB. So far I have bought a few heatsinks trying to fit it there. I'm hoping the TT Blue Orb Refurb. I got for $19.99 will clamp down on it's low profile design. I tried a xigy and that did not fit. I bought a Zalman 7700 series too just in case. Something to do whilst the family is in Hawaii later this month. Should have left the mobile 3200 2.0 in the box and skipped the finding a workable heatsink idea. I wish I had a 790FX for my PII 940. I slept an hour last night making all this stuff work as I knew I could :lol: .
