So there is this laptop my brother is using. It has a 256GB SSD running Windows 10 and softwares. There is also a 1TB 7200 RPM HDD for storing stuff. I'm wondering maybe he can split a 256GB Partition from the HDD and create a RAID 1 with the partition and the SSD. What do you think?

Solution
Do not do this.
There is zero reason for a RAID 1.

And a that combination of drives leaves the SSD running at the speed of the HDD.

Exactly! Data protection! So I think I should forget about it, then?
RAID 1 is for drive redundancy, not data redundancy.
The OS and the user sees a single copy of a file. Delete it, or get corrupted...it is gone. There is no 'second copy'.

For data protection, you need actual backups on a different device.
