Hello everyone,
Few words for me - I do a lot of video editing on my 2014 15" macbook retina. Last year I had to invest in long term storage solution compatible with laptop and my needs. I bought an IcyRaid docking station and two 5TB Toshiba X300 drives which I configured in RAID 1. There I have put all my data with the idea to be available any time for editing and have it backup. At first it seemed great as it kept spining around 180mb/s read and write, however as time passed and the drives filled, the speed slow down to around 130mb/s read and write.
The other issue is that often I have to edit off site from my home, so I got a 500GB SSD in which I keep my current projects and edit from it both for the speed gain and not being bound to edit only at my home. Slowly the IcyRaid station turned more to storage and backup solution where I keep everything and do my TimeMachine backups.
Recently I started thinking whether this RAID 1 setup is actually any beneficial, because:
- if any physical damage happens to the enclosure it could damage both drives
- if one drive fails I have to buy exactly the same drive so that the system can rebuild it before I would be able to use it
- speedwise I believe the RAID 1 makes the whole storage slower compared to a single drive solution
So I'm wondering whether I should split the drives in two physical (system) volumes and clone them myself. This will let me have backups to two, if not three different drives which would be accessible at any time. So my first question is whether I can stop the RAID 1 while keeping the information of the drives intact. Otherwise I would have to copy everything to 3rd drive, and then have the drives erased and copy everything back to them individually.
If I take the step above maybe I could get a smaller drive which could be faster and edit of it while the other would remain just for backup. So here comes the next wondering - should I get a new external drive, something like the WD My book 8tb just for backup, and another 2x2TB drives to put in my current enclosure and configure them in RAID 0. I would regularly copy files between them so I stay confident I have a backup, but working off the RAID 0 storage for speed. Currently the speed down is very noticeable while editing photos in Lightroom.
This post got very long. Excuse me for taking off your time but any comments would be well appreciated.
Many thanks,
Mario
