Hello. Silly question that's asked a numerous times, but have to ask anyways: currently I have an oldie but goodie i5-3570k, gigabyte Z77X-UD3H, 32GB RAM. Also running off of a 1TB SSD. I have a few 500gb drives sitting around doing nothing, and wanted some info whether or not it would be a worthwhile cause to reconfigure my pc for a RAID configuration. Would there be any gains? Is it worth redoing my desktop? Maybe a safety net if it ever crashed? Any positive input is welcome. I love messing with this, but somewhat behind the times. Thanks for any advice.

A single SSD is already as fast as any 3-5 drives would/could ever be in a RAID 0 or RAID 5...

Nothing much to be gained, in my opinion, as one certainly would not mix SSDs and spinning drives in any sort of RAID (as the SSD would be dragged down by the slower drives when mixed), and, if solely looking for a location for backups, mixing spinning disks in RAID 0 or 5 often complicates recovery efforts, as although the copy to the drives might be faster, recovering from any RAID involves hoping it is recognized and works when needed without hang-ups ...which RAID 0 and 5 often bring at the worst time.
