Raid Controller for 6 x 6TB disks

Hi,

Im currently in the market, looking for a new Raid Controller for a home server.
Ive been looking at Adaptec, Dell PERC and LSI MegaRaid, but cant seem to find the right one.

My rig is:
1 x AMD Ryzen 1700x
4 x 16GB DDR4
1 x ASRock x370 Taichi mobo
1 x Nvidia GT 10xx GPU.
6 x 6TB HGST Desktar NAS


The server is running VMware ESXi 6.5 U1

The hosts will be storing large files, that dosent require much IOPS - but will require IOPS for Plex.

Ive found several controllers, but they all seem to be from 2013-2015 and im not sure, that i want to spend that amount of money on an old controller.

Im fairly new to Raid Controllers not being shipped by OEM providers, so all the help i can get is much appreciated!

Thinking Raid 5 or Raid 6 - no SSD cache is necesarry.

How much storage space do you need?
How redundant/resilient do you need the storage to be?
How fast do you need the storage to be?

Also, have you looked at the NASs that can run Plex directly on the NAS?

Hi,

i will be using 6x6TB disks
I will be using Raid 5 or Raid 6

I cant run several VMs on an NAS, so i have 7-8 VMs running on standalone SSDs, connected to the sata ports on the mobo.
