Raid for video editing or larger ssds?

Hello,

I edit video and currently have a 2TB HDD where I have my media files and my premiere pro projects. I also have a 500GB SSD where my scratch disk goes.

I've been wondering if a NAS storage device with Raid with multiple HDDS will get me a faster performance than what I currently have? Is it true multiple HDD's in a raid is just as fast as a single SSD?

Also if I were to go with a NAS and Raid which version of Raid do you recommend for video editing?



Here is the specs of my computer.

Intel Xeon CPU E3-1270v5 3.60Ghz

16.0GB of Ram

64 bit windows 10 pro

Quadro m4000 Graphics NVIDIA 8GB of video memory.

A local SSD is faster than HDD in RAID 0, either local or in a NAS over the LAN.

Do all your work and processing local on an SSD, save the finished product to a NAS later.

May I ask why to store the files on a NAS and not work on a project with the NAS? What's the difference between that and just storing a finished project on a external HDD?

well...a true NAS box is generally more stable than just an external HDD.
More space, possible RAID of whatever level, not going to fall off your desk, viruses...
I trust stuff in my Linux based Qnap NAS far more than in an external drive connected to my main PC.

Work and render on your local system, on an SSD.
Later, move completed files off to the NAS (or wherever) as space dictates.

Speaking of that, how are you fixed for routine backups?

I got backblaze online backup as well as two external backups. Google drive etc

An SSD of sufficient size is faster than HDD in RAID 0.

Size depends on budget.

But also..'faster' at what phase of the operation?

With NAS, in theory, you get about 100MB/s max, but most the NAS will not get there... it hoovers about 60~75%
due to your network switch and traffic also how good is your network card and settings

Here are transfer speeds in order
1- DAC Direct Attached Storage
2- NAS Direct Attached Storage

Most of the case the USB 3.0 drive can be faster the NAS.
Keep in mind speed depends on:
Source, Target, and Bandwidth, it can be fast when ALL three can handle speed

Unless you are editing @ 4K, 3.5" HDD with final cut will just do the job for DVD and HD
