Raid implementaion and configuration

Is there a speed consideration, such all brives need to match in speed and is there a maximum speed? Is the speed part of the question, really just a cost consideration for RAID 1 or 5 , as examples.

RAID 1 writes will be limited by the slowest device. RAID 5 can be limited by parity calculation as well as the slowest device.
