Raid0/sata & deepstore/IDE

Hello,

I'm a newbie here in case you didn' notice by now.

I bought 2 raptor 36.7gig drives and I wish to set those up in raid 0. I also have an older wd800jb 7200 rpm drive that i want to use for storage on an IDE channel. Anybody here have any experience with this type of setup and can offer some advice to a newb?

Do you have an sata controller on your motherboard? (Are there some sata plugs on it)
If not you are going to need to buy a pci sata controller card. That will run about $20 but I would spend a little more to get a decent one.

Yes the mobo has SATA controllers. It's actually a brand new system I'm building with an Athalon 64 3700+ processor and a decent Asus mobo. here are the mobo specs.

I'm just hoping that I can still have a storage drive that is not a part of the raid configuration. I am hoping that if i set up the storage drive on IDE that will work?

The sata and ide controllers are completely separate devices, it would actually be hard to not have them separate lol.
Just hook up the raptors to that Sil3114 controller, go into the raid bios for that controller, use the little wizard thing to make the raid0 stripe, and you are good to go. Just hook that ide drive up to one of the standard ide ports.
Remember, you will need to hit f6 in the begining of the windows install and provide those sil3114 drivers on a floppy so windows can install on your raid0.

Thank you folken, I was pretty sure that's how it would work but since I've never done it i was a bit uncertain as most newbs are. lol. I see by your reply that I should use the Sil controller huh? Obviously that must be a better controller than southbridge? I really had no idea what the difference would be if any.

I had read about the procedure for setting up the raid 0 on the THG raid FAQ but i didnt know about which controller to use. Thank you very much for your input!

Connecting to the southbridge controlled sata might negate the need for drivers for windows setup but I have found that a separate controller seems to be much more reliable and plenty fast.
