[SOLVED] RAM choices

My notebook had two RAM modules with identical specs except for the capacity and the CL bit:

4 gb (CL11 [11-11-F3]): Kingston ACR16D3LS1NGG
2 gb (CL11 (11-11-11]): A-Data AM1L16BC2P1-B1FS

It was a bit slow so I replaced one of the modules with an 8gb (CL11[11-11-11]) module: Crucial CT102464BF160B

I found the 8gb and 4 gb combination to be an improvement but not great, so I tried an 8gb and 2gb combination and found that to be considerably better.

Was it the CL rating that affected the performance, and can you please explain it to me?
