I recently got a new laptop, specifically the ASUS K501LX-EB71. The processor is a 5th Gen. i7, but I can't seem to find any RAM that is SPECIFICALLY listed to be compatible. I am assuming that the answer is as simple as all the RAM available would work (such as this Crucial stick, or even this Corsair stick).

The memory type is listed as:

8GB DDR3L SDRAM

There is no information on how many slots the laptop has, nor if it will support anything more than the 8GB it has now. They do not even offer memory as an upgrade, [strike]which kind of leads me to believe that 8GB is probably the limit.[/strike]

As I often do when I cannot find out what something like your notebook has for memory from the manufacturer, I go to Crucial.com. Their parent company, Micron Technologies, owns memory fabs, so they really know memory.

Your ASUS K501LX
Maximum memory: 12288MB
Slots:1 (1 bank of 1)

So it looks like you have one memory slot. Despite listing 12GB as the maximum that your notebook can have, the highest capacity memory sticks they offer are 8GB.

So that is probably what you are stuck with.

If you are interested, they do show 2 SSD's...

Crucial BX100 120GB SATA 6Gb/s 2.5" Internal SSD
Crucial BX100 500GB SATA 6Gb/s 2.5" Internal SSD

Here is a more precise look at it's internals. https://www.asus.com/Notebooks/K501LX/specifications/ (I'd shorten it but I don't remember the exact format)

It has 8GB of RAM, 4GB on board and 4GB that can be removed and upgraded. My question isn't about whether or not I can actually install RAM, it's whether or not RAM that is specifically listed to be compatible with 3rd and 4th Gen. Intel processors will work on a 5th Gen. Intel processor.

I went to Crucial.com and ran a compatibility test and the RAM they provided as compatible was listed as being compatible with 3rd and 4th gen Intel processors.

Right but, where one of the sticks is on-board, it's close to impossible to find the specifics of it's latency. I know the speed to be 1600 and Crucial has given me several upgrade options for the RAM. And even some of the options they have given me have different speeds then the on-board.

Your computer has one open slot allowing you to insert 1 8GB RAM card. The reason it says that the maximum memory allowed is 12GB is due to the fact that it has 4GB RAM built right into the motherboard. You will see the built-in ram RAM module if you open the back of your computer and look at the empty RAM slot(or if RAM slot is occupied remove RAM module)...the 4 black blocks that are clearly visible represent the ram built into the main board.
