I was wondering what ram I might choose for my new setup. I would prefer 8gb ddr4 (2 x 4gb) or 12gb. Also I was wondering if the asus rog strix h270f gaming might be overkill for this setup. I am mostly going to be gaming, but I do a fair amount of video editing, but not enough for i7 7700k.

feel free to recommend any new parts. i am also trying to track down a gpu.

specs:
i5 7600k (4.0ghz - 4.2 ghz)
gtx 750ti (probably very big bottleneck)
ASUS ROG STRIX H270F GAMING motherboard

Ebay. i5 6th gen and 170 mobo, once its installed & up & running it mayaswell be new (you wont notice difference)
Heed my words on the first reply - Do not get a 750ti. Youre weighing up minimal differences of CPU power VS a gaping hole of GPU power.
yes, an absolute ludicrous waste of your $ when youve compromised so much in crucial areas.

Also get a non k CPU. you cant overclock with a H board. you need a Z. (overclocking is an unnecessary luxury).
get a better GPU, for your sake.

You don't want 12 GB RAM, you either want 2x4 GB or 2x8 GB so you will run in dual channel mode.
You also want a Z270 mobo instead of H270 as the H270 cannot overclock your K CPU.

With that said, why don't you look at the new I5-8400 or I5-8600K instead, both of them will beat the 7600K in performance.

I am afraid I neither have the money for the recommended i5's or the mobo (sort of) and was wondering if you could recommend a new motherboard and/or processor. (perhaps b250m?) My current cpu is 3.2ghz so anything relatively higher would be nice. If I were to get a gtx 1060, then a vr capable chip would be nice.

Either wait for next year for the cheaper B360 mobo and pair it with I5-8400 or go with a Ryzen 1600 and B350 mobo combo.
