Ram doesn't match motherboard

I bought a server motherboard off ebay and it said it needed ddr2 so I ordered the ddr2 and the notch didnt line up either way I put the ram and I am not a beginning enthusiast. So I tried normal ddr, ddr2 from another computer, even ddr3 and none matched so I assume there is some sort of special server ram I need so does anyone know what that might be?

Yes, there's special kind of server RAM, ECC + Registered RAM mostly. DDR2 had distinctive mounting difference.

I don’t know the exact model but I know it’s an Intel motherboard with two dual core xeons and supposedly supports ddr2 ram. And does the whole buffered and unbuffered thing affect physical aspect?

Middle notch was in different place in server RAM. In that case other differences are not important.
