I'm building a system based on the Gigabyte GA-965P-DS3 motherboard and the E6400 cpu. I have everything picked out except for my RAM, which I'm struggling with. I would like to limit my spending to $200 for 2Gb, any suggestions?

Here are the ones I've been considering:

GeIL DDR2 800 (PC2 6400) - $185

OCZ ATI DDR2 800 (PC2 6400) - $180 after rebate

Patriot eXtreme Performance DDR2 800 (PC2 6400) - $190 after rebate

CORSAIR XMS2 2GB DDR2 800 (PC2 6400) TWIN2X2048-6400 - $167 after rebate

I've read that you need to be careful with selecting RAM for the GA-965P-DS3, but of the above mentioned memory the only one that I could find with ANY reviews with that MB was the Corsair.

Any help would be appreciated. Thanks!

the Geil ram is known to work well with that mobo and to OC well.

i have the Geil ram in my Gigabyte DS4 mobo and i am very happy with it. 100% stable. you need to up the voltage to 2.1v (sticker on ram advises this) for best performance but it still posts at 1.8v so you can go into bios and up volts +0.3.

Overclockers UK sell the DS3 and the Geil ram as a bundle as its a known stable configuration.

good luck

Thanks for all the feedback, it was really helpful! I'll definitely be overclocking this system, so I wanted some RAM that will be stable in that MB without breaking the wallet. Sounds like I'd be in good shape with any of these.

I'm leaning towards the Geil right now. I like to hear that it works well with this board, plus I won't have to deal with a mail-in rebate. However, I think I'll try to do a bit more research on the OCZ before orderings....

Thanks!

I used this ram to build a system (last Thursday) with a GA-965P-DS3 and E6300. I got one stick that overclocks to 430FSB no problem, and one stick that won't run at 400FSB/800Mhz (spec).

On the dud stick, I even tried relaxed timings (something like 5-8-8-20 ). I am going to RMA the second stick to corsair as it won't perform as specified (800MHz, 5-5-5-15). Looking at newegg comments, this is a rather normal occurance.

For the good stick, I have no idea how far it will overclock. My goal was simple: 3GHz on an E6300. This stick does it now, and that's good enough for me. I would have been perfectly happy if both sticks had gone to 800Mhz/5-5-5-15 as specified.

So, I can certainly recommend the Corsair memory, but you might have to wrestle Newegg or Corsair to get two sticks that work as specified.

I'm building two systems with the GA-DS3, and I chose the Patriot Extreme LLK series PC2-6400 due to its performance in the TomsHardware overclocking tests *and* chose it after many hours of study (via Professor Google) seeing that many people were successfully using this RAM with the DS3 for overclocking.

I'm at commonmancomputing. Thanks.

I already got an e6300 and will soon be getting a ds3. those are some great memory choices that i will have to consider. i was also checking out this Gskill ram with 4-4-3-5 ddr800

http://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.asp?item=N82E16820231114

This is my first build and i was wondering if this ram is better because of its lower timings. I also read this ram will easily do 1000mhz but will prob go for 800-900. I also currently have an Intel 965 board that I got along with the e6300 and it states it needs ram at 1.8vto work. Im guessing this Gskill ram wont boot up will it? And if not, what other alternative do I have from above posted ram? Im not getting the ds3 for a couple more weeks.

Thanks
