I got a custom build pc from my cousin a while ago and finally got it working. I dont know the specs really but when I went into the system information on my computer it says there is 4gb of installed memory. I find this kind of weird since when I look into the window of the computer there is clearly 3 ram sticks installed so how would 3 be able to add up to only 4 gigs. Also I know this computer is a bit outdated (4 years or so) but 4 gigs of ram isn't much, right? Like doesn't the average pc have like 8, I know that at the time my cousin was building this pc he was spending a lot of money on it so it seems unrealistic that he would only have put 4 gigs in it, I mean the school computers have more! Can someone help me out with this, perhaps the ram slots arent working on the mother board? or am I reading something wrong, im not the best with computers.

Thanks :)

Solution

Maybe you have 4 + 2+ 2 and one or both of the sticks have different cas latencies or clock speeds and are just plain incompatible

Ugh, seems like thats what im going to have to do eh :/ I spend so much time cable managing my setup so im going to procrastinate on this until a day I feel more motivated XD since its not really urgent at the moment. I guess ill get back to this post when I do. I remember looking in on the side and it did say, I cant remember but I think 8gb (4gbx4gb) but I could be wrong.
Thanks :)

I used trial and error to find the broken one and replaced it with a 8gb stick. It was supposed to be 3 2gbs but 1 wasent working.
