Ram need for file server

Hi there - I've set up a file server using a Gigabyte GA-7DPXDW-P with dual 2.0 Athlon MPs, 8x120Gb SATA drives (Raid 5 + Hot Spare) and 1Gb RAM. However, I have been told this is way too little RAM for the amount of HD space.

My question is - how do you calculate the amount of RAM needed. In the end, I'll probably max the board out at 3.5GB, but I still would like to know if there is a formula?

Sorry to bring this back...

I think the more the better. I have the same board and have bought 3 1GB ecc/reg kingston memory for it. My problem is I can only use one at a time or the system becomes unstable/freezes (under win2k server) usually right after I login locally into the system. Sometimes I can click on shortcuts but then sometimes nothing happens when I do. I have tested this w/only the video card in and nothing else. I have bios version F5.

Do you still have 1GB of ram? If you have more, what brand/spec of ram do you have?

The amount of RAM you have is more than enough for what you use yer server for, the biggest need in file server is throughput of CPU/PCI/HD and not amount or RAM, because all it does is Read/Write operations on BIG things like files which is done in consecutive way. More RAM is good for Databases and Application servers where everything is stored in one place for a long time like records updating or document writing is in the memory until you update/save which then is sent to HD.

..this is very useful and helpful place for information...
