Ram Not detecting

So i was trying to install windows 7 on a laptop and it said i needed at least 512mb of ram. I looked in the laptop and it had 2 sticks of 256mb of ram. I tested both sticks or ram and both slots. only one slot worked so i cleaned the slot and it worked. The next day it said i only have 254mb of ram in the laptop. Any ideas of how to fix the slot.

*Note: I've checked and there are no bent pins.

Wash it with alcohol and a pencil antistatic.
but with 512 mb won't be able to work with the 7, you need at least 2 GB

wait so dip a pencil in rubbing alcohol and clean with that?

I'd use rubbing alcohol and a foam swab, above may be referring to an eraser on a pencil which can leave the gummy residue, also, suggesting the foam swab (like a woman's makeup swab) as many might suggest cotton fiber swabs like Q-Tips which have a tendency to leave cotton fibers
