RAM not working on PC

Hey I'm using a asus 990fx 2.0 motherboard and I had to replace a 4gb stick i broke so i just put a 8gb stick in there so it has a 4GB, 4GB, 4GB, 8GB stick config however it only says i have 16GB available. It is HyperX DDR3 RAM if that matters. Why is this? My PC mate told me although it wouldn't be dual channel it should still work?

Any help would be nice thank you.

Mixing or Adding memory is hit and mis even if identical.

I took my computer to a professional and I had this reply I got "Your laptop requires a certain voltage for the RAM to function."

I'm no expert and I can't answer for yours in particular but I do get the gist of what I need to get it to work. Although the RAM works fine it's not compatible with my laptop but experiencing black screens, loud fans and basically non-functionality.

My original 4GB RAM stick is 1.35v and the 8GB RAM stick is 1.5v. I will need an 8GB RAM stick which only uses 1.35v to "get the laptop to work."
