Ram not working.

I have 2x4 dual-channel ram, but it says i have only 3.97 gb's usable and i it says 8 gb single channel ram. I have 64 bit os, Windows 8. Why is it doing this? I built my pc myself. Thanks!

Try different configurations of the RAM to isolate whether A) the unregistered stick isn't seated properly B) the ram slot has a malfunction or C) a dead stick.

Does your motherboard have more than two ram slots?
