I recently built my own custom computer and I am using a Kingston 2GB ram running at 800MHz. I would like to Overclock it to 1333Mhz. Is it safe, how do I do it? I overclocked my processor through the BIOS but how do I overclock the RAM?

Solution

There is no DDR3 800 memory as far as I know, you must mean you've bought DDR3 1333, but your system is only running it at 800Mhz, because you have not manually set the memory parameters to run at 1333, that doesn't require overclocking that requires setting your DDR3 slot voltage manually and setting your memory timings manually.

Now if you can list your specs in detail, IE, M/B, CPU, Memory Etc. we may be able to help you get it in the ballpark.
800 to 1333? Forget it

And if you OCd the cpu through bios than its most likely that you overclocked your ram as well. Besides, overclocking ram gives very little in return(mostly heat) so Id leave it. As for "how to" look at the sticky at top of this section.

Ok thanks. I might be getting another 2gb to add to my ram. Any idea about the difference between ddr2 and ddr3. I am currently using ddr3. My motherboard supports both ddr2 and ddr3.

Yes if you list your specs.

You said you built it yourself, you should know whats in it, even if you tossed all the packaging M/B brand and model#s are on the M/B, Memory model#, Speeds, and Voltage, should be on a sticker on the side of each module, and Kingston does label their modules?????????????

In PC3-10600/1333Mhz Kingston has Value Ram @ cas9 and HyperX @ cas 7, so no one can help you until we know whats in your possession.

But as I went thru many sites and even my manufacturer's site, I found out that my ram has frequency of 1333mhz. But somehow the system is running it at 800mhz. Now my question is how do I change this setting so as to utilize wat I have bought. Any help will be much appreciated. Thanks.
