For about a month now i've been having trouble with my ram. I have 16gb of ram installed, even verified it in the bios, but whenever i get close to 8gb windows starts giving me warning messages and shuts everything down. In extreme cases some programs crash and my desktop freezes. This happens if my pc is running for too long. After a few hours of normal use my ram usage will fill up to 8gb even with no program open at all. I notice that that whenever i have trouble the process called servicehost local system uses an extreme amount of memory. ive already tried using a bigger pagefile, some fixes in the registry and disabling some processes but noting helps.
specs, if it helps: alienware 15r2
i7-6700hq
16gb ddr4
128gb ssd + 1tb hdd
gtx970m
win 10
Thanks in advance to anyone willing to help because im becoming quite desperate.

is it an out of memory error? It could be a memory leak

Download Process explorer and run it as admin (it comes from Microsoft so its safe)

the default view is tree structure meaning like your task manager screen, it will show what processes are under each service, but unlike the task manager, it shows the ram usage of each part so you can see what is eating your ram

Private bytes = actual ram usage
Working set = Ram + page file usage

This page shows what all the colours and headings mean, link at bottom of it shows how to use it to find problems. You can right click headers and run an av scan from within the program.

Alright, i found the process that takes up nearly all memory: svchost.exe. But since this is a windows process i'm not really sure what to do now. Any suggestions?

which service host? as there can be about 14 of them in task manager?

if you using process explorer, click on the view header and change it to tree view, then find the service and see what is running underneath it as service host should have a process running under it which will give us some idea what is actual cause

some don't so have a look in the commands line and see what it says there (wow, just noticed you can make text size bigger, really handy on my 4k screen as i was needing to squint to read lines)

if you hover mouse over icon for svhost in process explorer it shows details of what it is doing - I never noticed that before either.

alright, so the PID of this svchost process is 552 and it consists of the following services:
application information
BITS
group policy client
IKE and AuthIpsec Keying Modules
Ip Helper
Server
Geolocation service
User profile service
task sheduler
System event notification service
shell hardware detection
user manager
windows management instrumentation
microsoft account sign in assistant
windows pusg notifications systems service
windows update

There are 2 smaller processes running under this svchost but they dont use as much memory and seem to be running fine.
