RAM ?'s 4gigs at 2000 or 8 at 1600

So I have a 790 mb, I am curiouse what you think abot RAM for this board? I currently have 4 gigs of Patriot 2000 running at 1800 stable. I am thinking of getting 4 more gigs. but this board will oly let me run them at 1000 I believe. So the mayjor question is, should I do it what will I gain? These EVGA boards are nice but this drives me crazy I want to run it all on high, haha. I was never able to get my exsisting RAM to run at 2000 anyways I have the timings low like 7 7 7 7 21 or something. If i get 4 more gigs will i be able to lower the timings further? I ask the manufactures and they suggest I run them at 1333 but i paid for 2000mht and I want the benefits of faster ram you know. Show me some luv fellow Techies.... What you think??????????????? 😱

You will not see to much of a performance gain running your ram at 1600 or 2000 IMO you dont see much of a gain of speed with higher ram speeds. Depending on what programs you are running 4 gigs is plenty of ram. It would help if you gave a list of programs you will be running but in most cases 4 gigs is more then enough ram.

The official AMD word on running memory with AM3 processors is that DDR3-1333 is the highest supported (guaranteed) speed with two modules and DDR3-1066 is the highest supported speed with four modules. Anything above that is not guaranteed to work perfectly by AMD, although in practice it might work just fine (such as your two sticks of DDR3 at 1800 MHz.) I have seen people pull off four sticks of DDR3 at 1600, and I have also seen people having trouble with doing that and having to drop down to slower speeds like DDR3-1333 or -1066.

DDR3-1066 vs. DDR3-1800 in actual usage should be somewhere around a few percent slower. Swapping to disk when you've run out of RAM grinds the system to a halt as HDDs are hundreds of times slower than RAM. So it would be a no-brainer from a performance standpoint to upgrade to more RAM if you needed it. The question you really have to ask yourself is if you actually need more RAM as getting 4 GB of decent DDR3 is somewhere around a hundred bucks, which may be better spent upgrading some other part of your system or saving up for a newer system in the future. Those are just some things to think over.

I hope this is enough info for you guys, lol 😀 I play some games (civ 4, Fallout 3, ect.), but also do alot of muti-tasking, school work (word) 3-4 documents at a time, watch br movies to my 32 inch. LCD through my computer (hdmi) have about 800gigs of music and movies. You think I should get 4 more to make 8 gigs total? If I run them all at 1600 can I lower the timmings and keep my FSB(front side bus) at 1600, I want to keep my q9550 at 3.4GHt.? Just curious thanks for the replys hope this will help....
