RAM Speed Question

Hey guys, i'm planning on building a computer and here is the preliminary spec.

I already plan on changing the HDD and PSU. But i have a question

The above ram is PC2-8500 running at 1066mhz with latency 5-5-5-15. I was wondering, would it be better/worse/simliar to run 800mhz PC-6400 ram with 4-3-3-15 latency?

The reason i ask this is budget limitations, and the cheaper ram and nforce mobo is around £80 cheaper.

If it was to run worse, would it still be worth investing or should i just go for the 1066mhz stuff?

You wont notice any difference with 1066mhz RAM unless you OC the CPU.

Have you looked at possibly a Q6600 also, should be a bit more futureproofing for you.

Might consider the 1066 because running DDR2-800 on a 1333 FSB, you will either be running it at 667 or 832 which is outside the spec for the ram. Most high quality ram should be able to handle the slight overclock just fine though.

Depends on how much you want to OC your CPU.

There are folks who say they are running Chookman's memory at DD2-900 which will let you OC the CPU to 3.6Ghz.

The CPU still has quite a bit more overhead than this which may be easier to get with the DDR2-1066, but 3.6Ghz may just be a nice resting spot for the CPU w/o trying to overdo an OC.

If i do overclock it shouldn't be by much.

The thing is, the stick that is the 800mhz DDR2 runs at 4-3-3-15 latency on an nForce 680i only. On a P35 chip it runs at only 4-4-4-15. So would it be worth getting an nForce 680i board as well. Or just getting other ram?

Can anyone suggest other alternatives as well as the above?

get 680i if u want to have SLI , and go for SLI if u play @ 1920x1200 or higher , if u dont play @ that resolutions , then get a P35 board

Thanks maziar, so its not worth getting the 4-3-3-15 ram and an nForce 680i board?

Also, if i dont overclock 800mhz 4-4-4-12/4-4-4-15 will run just as well as the 1066mhz 5-5-5-15?

But if i do overclock get the 1066mhz?

if u dont OverClock , there is a litttle difference between 800mhz and 1066 , i always recommend 1066 to someone who want to OC his CPU very high ,

Crucial Ballistix can do a wide range of timings & speeds. I can do 800MHz 3-3-3-8 @2.1v, 1000MHz 4-4-4-12 @2.1 or 1200MHz 5-5-5-15 @2.2v. The Crucial dimms are some of the best overclocking RAM out there.

Okay thanks guys, ill probably go with the 800mhz stuff, and possibly upgrade to a quad core.

Ill either choose crucial ballistix or the OCZ platinum.

However, i'm still not sure whether a P35 or 680i board would be better. What do you think?

as i said get 680i if u sli and as i said get sli if u play @ 1920x1200 or higher ,if not save some money and get a nice p35 board like ASUS P5K, ASUS P5K-E , GIGABYTE P35 DS3R(they support only DDR2) or ASUS P5KC or GIGABYTE P35C DS3R (They support both DDR2 and DDR3 ,although DDR3 is limited to 4gb and these 2 boards dont OC as good as the others )

yes as long as u dont OC much , (even though i have seen large OverClocks with good DDR2 800 rams )

CPU : Core 2 Duo 6320
RAM: DDR2-667 Kingston ( 1G x 2 )
FSB😀RAM ratio = 4:5
Currently no Graphic Card installed.
