Ram speed ? Worth it?

Nov 17, 2008
Hey guys i have 4gb of corsair memory.. i have cpu id open but not sure which speed figure i should be look at to gauge the speed of the memory.

If i were to upgrade it to a faster memory would i see much difference in speed for gaming?

I have a Ati 6850 and am only getting around 20-30 fps on battlefeild 3 on 1680x1050

il post my system specs here and you can tell me whats the weakest point

Amd athlon II x4 620
GA-MA785GT-UD3H Motherboard
4Gb of Ddr3 Corsair -Dram Frequency 669.7Mhz PC3-10700H
ati 6850 1gb
650w corsair psu
windows 7 s pack 1

Any advice for improved system performace?

Memory will not make enough difference for you to notice. Your biggest limitation there is your CPU. The Athlon II X4 620e runs at 2.6 ghz which is a little slow for a gaming CPU. Probably your best upgrade would be to repalce your CPU with a Phenom II X4 955 BE http://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.aspx?Item=N82E16819103808

Check out this article ( http://www.tomshardware.com/reviews/battlefield-3-graphics-performance,3063.html ) to get a better idea of what you need to run BF3 at higher details.

Try turning down some of the detail settings to see if that improves your FPS.

Your motherboard would handle it fine, however, you may have difficulty finding one right now because retailers are having difficulty keeping htem in stock due to the holiday demand.

Just because A CPU is expensive doesn't mean that it is the best CPU. I recommended the Phenom II 955 because it is reasonably priced and would offer you a significant improvement in performance for the money. The Phenom II 1100T is nearly twice as much money but the overall performance increase over the 955 is minimal especially in games. IMO the 955 is the best cost/performance for your setup. I suggest you look at the following articles to get a good idea of what's required for a good gaming setup at a variety of price points: http://www.tomshardware.com/reviews/gaming-cpu-overclocking,3077.html , http://www.tomshardware.com/reviews/fastest-graphics-card-radeon-geforce,3085.html

If you look at the last page of the article on CPU's here "Gaming CPU Hierarchy Chart" http://www.tomshardware.com/reviews/gaming-cpu-overclocking,3077-5.html
you will see that your current CPU is in the fifth tier of performance and both the 955 and the 1100T are in the third tier. That's a pretty significant upgrade for either one. However, do you really want to spend an extra $75 for a CPU that offers virtually no performance improvement.
