I have a dual channel gigabyte z170m mobo with 1x8 gb ram..
I am planning on upgrading it with 1x4 gb is it possible?..

Solution
Generally bad mixing and matching, but if you got a stick from the same vendor and same model, and the timings and frequencies (speeds) all matched up it is doable. You'd need to know the speed and timings of your old and new RAM, and even then you may have stability issues.

Still I'd recommend going 2x8GB as suggested. You could get another 8GB of the same RAM and get dual channel running properly.
Hi Paul,
Mixing and matching RAM isn't usually recommended when upgrading RAM, even if they have the same clock speed/voltage. It's pretty much a shot in the dark whether it'll work for you or not, you're much better off just getting 2 8gb sticks.
Good luck!
