Ram too fast? Is there any disadvantages in having ddr4 ram higher than 2666mhz with a Threadripper 2950x motherboard like Prime or Zeneth Extreme?

In other words should I always go for the fastest speed Ram or are there any problem in having it too high like 3000mhz plus? like instability etc?

Talking stock not overclocking

Not all systems will run faster RAM at those faster speeds, but you can always lower the speed of your RAM. Buying too fast of RAM might be a waste of money, but 3000 and 3200MHz are both sweet spots for price/performance.

3000MHz RAM is overclocked RAM no matter what system have (relative to existing systems at this present time.) If you wanted stock you would simply run RAM at the specified 2933MHz for the 2950X.

You approach a very broad subject, and are doing it sideways.

There's 3 factors to ram speeds. The first is cpu memory controller, it operates at a specific frequency, for the threadripper it's DDR4 2667 (officially). Second, there's the motherboard, which depending on model can take anywhere from 2133 to 4000+. Third is the ram. DDR4 stock default speed is 2133. That's as low as it goes. But can be raised upto 2666 by the cpu choice, without any ram OC. Speeds beyond 2666 are all considered OC, and are usually gotten by a simple enable of the XMP profile.

Amd doesn't use the same hyperthreading as Intel. They use multiple dies under the lid. Each of those core dies is connected by amds infinity fabric which operates according to ram speeds. This makes ram speed somewhat important, you get better cpu performance with faster ram. You can get upto 20ish% performance increase just moving from 2133 to 3200.

Some cpus/motherboard/ram combos have had issues actually getting 3000 or higher, and maintain stability, 2933 was the best they could do.

None of which has anything to do with cpu OC or anything other than instituting XMP profiles already included in the ram speed.

If it helps i am looking To get a custom hedt workstion with Amd Thread ripper 2950x and either a Asus Prime A or Zeneth Extrreme Motherboard. Somewhat slsted to wards the Zeneth if it helps answer tge question. Was looking to get it from Scan 3xs or Pc aspecialist And the have various speed ram to choose from. Did not know any were over vlivked it dontcsay i just thought different ram

Gskill I think you for got to attach said list. So is 2933 the highest you have full stability and warantees withtou actually overclocking?
It's tricky. Memory and motherboard manufacturers will test different RAM that may be rated for higher than what the CPU manufacturer rates the CPU's memory controller. According to motherboard and memory manufacturer's, you can run faster RAM than what the CPU manufacturer specifies. Sometimes it works, sometimes it doesn't.

I would recommend DDR4 3000 or 3200. You can always just run it at 2933 if it won't work at 3000 or 3200. 2nd-gen Ryzne/ThreadRipper typically runs up to 3200.
