RAM upgrade ASUS P6X58D-E

I have 6 RAM slots on the mobo and three slots are filled with Corsair 6GB (3x2GB) DDR3 1600.
My son wants more memory added to play some games and have other windows open.
What are the best & cost-effective options for me to upgrade?
Also, do I have to fill the remaining 3 slots with matched RAM, or could I just buy one 4gb module and use that?
Please be specific in simple English for me to understand, thanks!
Also, is it okay buy second-hand from ebay, etc, or better to buy new?

I would buy new 2nd hand it maybe DOA. I would replace the ram with 4 GB simms. Since it supports 24 GB total so 4 GB in each slot

Thanks. But I'm not clear:
1. Can I keep the 3x2gb and add another one stick or does it have to be 3 sticks?
2. And if I add more sticks do they have to be DDR 1600 to match the existing RAM?
