Hi everyone:

I'm trying to upgrade RAM in our DVR box at work. It currently has 4 slots of DDR3 RAM, making it 8GB total. But the system services about 24 cameras so I wanted to add more RAM -- maybe 16GB and more. Except that I haven't done it since early 2000's. So any help would be appreciated.

I made a couple of screenshots.

1. Here's the mainboard:

2. This is the ASUS BIOS screen:

3. And this is DIMM configuration from BIOS:

Thanks in advance!

Thanks. Just curious though, I could swear it says ASUS Q87M-A on the board. Does it make a difference that the specs are for ASUS Q87M-E?

Also, I'm assuming getting 4 of those Crucial sticks for 32GB total would work as well, right?

Doing a google search the Q87M-A doesn't seem to exist?

Also theoretically yes that should be fine, although the specifications say it only supports up to 32gb, so don't upgrade past that. I would go with the 16 for now, and if you think you can get more performance still, add another 16.

Yeah, I noticed that too but in comparing the Q87M-E pics to your board it seems identical. And since you already have DDR3 1600 in there I am confident that at least for the RAM the specs are the same. The A might have been a one off for a particular OEM builder.

Why make this run single channel. If buying this use the two yellow slots for dual channel.

If wanting to use four sticks buy them in one set, even when the same make and model ram sometimes won't work together if from a different set so buy 4 sticks in one set if wanting 32gb.

You are totally right... I misread something or was tired... For dual channel the RAM needs to be in the same color slots.
