Ram upgrade+OC processor or new processor+MB+Ram?

Hey guys

My Rig has an old i7-920 @ 2.67, GENE II ROG MB paired with a 6gb ram DDR3 (3x2gb). Recently i bought a Nvidia 1060 to replace my Radeon 7950. The problem is, with some games, my pc still struggles to get a fluid experience, even in medium settings (and some reduced to low).

I play some dirtybomb, mass effect, and tried recently planetside 2. Especially in Planetside, the computer choked a lot! Had the setting lowered to low/medium and now its playable. Since the GPU should be strong enough to tackle this game and i was trying to save some money for the time being...

Is it worth OC my 920 to 4.0 and upgrading my ram to 16 gb? Will the performance be close (ish) to the ryzen 1600x? Will it suffice to play most games for the next 2 years?

Or will i just waste money? better off buying a a ryzen 1600x, mobo and 16gb ram?

I don't do video or imaging editing. I just use it for games and minor stuff (office, internet etc).

Overclocking the CPU wont hurt, but it is not going to get close to a 1600x. You have a 10 year old CPU, it will be a waste putting money into that system.

I would bite the bullet and get a new upgrade to a modern CPU/Mobo and DDR4 RAM. The 1600 is a decent CPU but it does lag behind Intel in gaming. The 8400 is priced the same as the 1600 and provides better performance. Additionally, the 2600x just released last week while it still lags behind Intel, the gap is so small that you will never notice a difference

If it were me I would get a 2600x or a 8400 and upgrade to a new platform.

Well, i really didn't think about a budget yet sice i was trying to figure out if a simple ram update would do the trick. But from what i've seen, for processor+mobo+ram think i (since I live in portugal, i'll guet mainly parts from EU) somewhere around 350€ tops (around 420$ i think) (i have a new PU and new GPU).

AMD

150€ - CPU
130€ - RAM (16gbDDR4)
70€ - MOBO

Intel 1
250€ - Buying a i7 (supported by my Mobo despite beeing old as f@£§)
100€ - RAM (16gb DDR3)

Intel 2

150€ - CPU (i5)
130€ - RAM (16gbDDR4)
70€ - MOBO

New Gen I5 is much better than that old I7. Or AMD, can't go wrong with #1 or #3

Yeah, that i figured, i was wondering if getting a new i7 and pairing with my old mobo and ddr3 would be better than rayzen or i5 + ddr4.

Toughts?

It is vs an i7 920. AMD is killing off gen 1 ryzen already, for Ryzen 2xxx. Ryzen 1600 is ok, budget is an issue. You have to update the bios for gen 1 ryzen chipsets, to support the latest cpu's.
