I'm planning to upgrade my ROG Strix from the default 8GB(Single) Ram Laptop to 16GB.

Laptop Specs:-
Model: ROG Strix G531GT
Intel Core i7-9750H
Nvidia GeForce GTX 1650
SSD: Intel 512GB
HDD: Seagate 500GB
RAM: SINGLE CHANNEL (SK Hynix 8GB 1Rx8 DDR4 PC4-2666V-SA1-11)
*There's a total of 2 RAM slots.

Now I've some doubts:
  1. Which RAM Channel should I buy to get good performance in 16Gb RAM; Another 8GB Single or Dual Channel RAM?
  2. Or Should I use a single 16GB RAM, if I use a single 16GB then should I use a higher frequency RAM than 2666MHz?
  3. Do I have to buy RAM from the same company i.e. SK hynix?
  4. Please suggest the RAM link or name.
FYI: I was checking this SK hnix RAM (https://www.amazon.in/Hynix-PC4-21300-DDR4-2666MHz-260-Pin-HMA81GS6CJR8N-VK/dp/B07JP4C1PD).
But here the model number is a little different from Original (HMA81GS6JJR8N) to HMA81GS6CJR8N (9th character is 'C' instead of 'J')

Another one I was checking this (https://www.amazon.in/dp/B08C56KXQJ/ref=cm_sw_em_r_mt_dp_SJRK7RPMBVD8M8SQ1DWK)
But here 2 8GB RAMS are available; 8GB and 8GB Single Rank!

I've attached the picture of the default single-channel RAM.
-Thanks in advance:)

  1. if you use another 8gb single, than it will run on dual channel no matter what's the speed, since Channel and Speed is different
  2. it is better to do 2x8gb rather than 16 single if you aim for the performance AND the limit of the motherboard of the laptop is below 32gb. unless you plan to upgrade to 32gb it would be useless. also ram speed is limited by the motherboard itself, so above 3200mhz, would be useless UNLESS your motherboard allows you to tune the subtimings, it would be a bit ok but still not worth the pennies.
  3. It is better to buy it from the same or even the identical one, same rank, speed, ics.
  4. if your link is 1Rx8, then you're good to go.

Thanks for clearing my doubts:).
Then I'll go with this one (https://www.amazon.in/dp/B07JP4C1PD/ref=cm_sw_r_apan_glt_fabc_6EPG7SAHD59H1N5HN9HS)
Yes, It's showing 1Rx8 there...

Hi @Koekieezz ,
Found exactly the same RAM here
(https://www.flipkart.com/hynix-pc4-...STRAMGFFYW9JVXDKWXHJ1EPQ&marketplace=FLIPKART)

There it's mentioned that SINGLE CHANNEL RAM, So I was ordering this one, Will it be Ok to attach it on another slot?
Thanks,
it is always single channel since ddr-ddr4, channel is what your cpu imc have it doesn't actually reflects to the chip at all. if cpu supports dual channel only, than 4 sticks will run at dual channel.

Ohk, Thanks again for the info.
Now I've ordered that SK Hynix's RAM.

Hi @Koekieezz
I'd ordered that RAM but received with different specs:
  1. NNNIX Korea written instead of SK hynix China.
  2. 2RX8 written instead of 1Rx8
  3. UA0-10 written instead of SA1-11
  4. HMT81GU6AFR8N-UH written instead of HMA81GS6JJR8N-VK.
Please help me to decide, Should I return this, Is this one duplicate?
-Thanks in advance:)

it will work fine, with some little/minor performance difference. you return the seller and ask the seller to send the 1Rx8 ones. Because the industry already shifted to 2Rx8 for 8 gigs one.

Hi @Koekieezz ,
Finally I got the same 1Rx8 ram for my laptop. The second tab (Slot 3) have the new RAM. Seems it working on Dual channel without any issues.
Thanks again for your help😃👍🏻

So both of your rams are 1Rx8? congrats then :D

Probably a little explanation for you (not important XD), your ram is a Hynix JJR (which is the equals of CJR/C Die, good for OC) at 2666mhz, The end of the part number, VK (which also means VKC), Indicates it's a 2666mhz module.

TFC - 2133Mhz
UHC - 2400Mhz
VKC - 2666Mhz
WMC - 2933Mhz
XNC - 3200Mhz
