Hi everyone,

I'm using B85M D3H motherboard with 4 GB DDR3 Ram.

I'm planning to upgrade my Ram to 8 or 16 GB.I have two two slots for ram on my motherboard and as of now I have one of them occupied with a 4GB stick.

Can I just buy an 8GB DDR3 ram and put it on the other slot so that I can use it along with the existing 4GB Ram?

Or should I buy a 4GB ram and put it on other slot? (I read somewhere that both sticks should be of same memory)

Or put 2 8GB stick on both the slots?

Thanking in advance for your answers

Ideally, no, you don't want to mix RAM kits. Last fall I replaced to 4GB Corsair sticks with two 8GB G.Skill sticks and that made many apps, like my L3d terrain editor much faster. Then I added a new SSD a week later and the system obviously got faster still. THEN I build an R5 1600x.... wow... fast! And smooth!

Get two new sticks per your budget and/or intended life span for that system. 8GB is worth it short-term, 16 long-term.
Best option is a two stick set. If you intend to upgrade the entire build in a year or less, go with two 4GB sticks. If you intend to keep this for a year+, go for two 8GB sticks. Either will boost performance. It depends on what uses you have for the PC. If speed is an issue, pairing new RAM with an SSD can have a huge positive impact. Figure out your intended uses/applications and term of ownership. Make budget smart choices.

Thanks for your reply. The main reason for upgrading ram is to boost the performance while gaming since New games demand 8 GB ram.

So, is it not possible or good to put an 8GB ram in one slot along with the existing 4GB ram in another?
