Thinking of upgrading ram on old pc, anyone know the difference between G.Skill Value f3-1600c11s-8gnt to F3-1600C11D-16GNT?
Both seem to be 8gb, but one says 8gnt the other 16, what's the difference?

This comes as a kit from the factory/out of the box;
https://www.gskill.com/product/165/186/1532584719/F3-1600C11D-16GNT
This is a single stick of ram;
meaning that the former is a matched kit from the assembly line(and are binned accordingly).

Make and model of the motherboard and the processor used? What rams are on it at the moment of writing?

Solution
The first is a single 8gb stick.
The second is a kit made up of two 8gb sticks for a total capacity of 16gb.

One should always prefer a dual channel kit for performance and compatibility.

It would be helpful to include the make/model of what you have, particularly motherboard, cpu and ram.

It's actually a Dell Optiplex 390 that was the old office pc, thinking it'd be good for a backup, i5-2400, but only one 4gb stick ram. I'd read over on the Dell forum site of people (with updated bios) being able to use F3-1600C11D-16GNT and I see two f3-1600c11s-8gnt sticks for sale on eBay for $25 shipped, which is the max I'd put into this pc. The one stick says PC-3 10600U-9-11-B1. I see several 4gb sticks under that search and if I can't find a good price for the G.Skill 16gb upping it to 8gb would be ok. So it's best to go with matched pairs then? Is that the numbers upper far right 1146, so would need another micron 1146 exactly or could be 1145 etc? Here's the listing I was referring to: G.SKILL16 GB (2x8) 1600 MHz PC3-10600 DDR3 SDRAM Desktop Memory Value Series 848354009566 | eBay
I also found a micron 1146 same specs as in pc but has hp sticker, does that matter if going in dell?

Is this is the spec sheet for your pc?
https://i.dell.com/sites/csdocument...ments/en/us/optiplex-390-spec-sheet-final.pdf
If so, your ram options is limited to two sticks of ddr3 1333 ram totaling 8gb.
It should be cheap to add a second stick like what you have.
Go to crucial or kingston sites and access their ram upgrade advisor.
Enter your pc info and you will get a list of supported upgrades.

Failing that, run cpu-Z and access the spd tab.
You will see what ram specs you now have installed.
Try to buy a stick with the exact same specs.
DDR3, speed, voltage, timing.
Intel is mostly tolerant of mismatched DDR3 ram if you need to go that way.
Otherwise buy a 2 x 4gb kit which will be matched.
