RAMDisk Operating System

What would happen if you made your computer transfer the Operating System to the RAM after you boot into Windows?

Would it be faster? Marginal at best?

Would data be lost?

Just a curiosity. I don't plan on doing it. lol

Much of your OS does reside in RAM all the time. You would probably have to copy a disk partition to RAM before booting Windows since wherever Windows boots from is C:. So if you have an extra 20 or 30GB RAM lying around, feel free.

The closest you can come to RAM speed is an NVMe SSD. They don't speed up things THAT much compared to a SATA SSD.

Booting up will be slower.
You have to boot, then transfer it to the RAMDisk.

After that, minimal gain. The OS mostly resides in memory anyway.

Looking to the future, this is what Optane purports to be.
Non volatile drive space, almost as fast as actual RAM.
Currently, way too expensive for regular consumer use.
