Random 0.5 - 1 second freezes during games

Hey guys,

Specs:

Windows 10
CPU: I7 4770K
Motherboard: Asus Z87 PLUS
RAM: 16GB DDR3
Graphics: Geforce 970

I had this issue when I had windows 7 as well. I don't notice it all the time but mainly in MMORPG's. Latest game is Blade and Soul I could be running to a quest area then everything freezes for a split second then carries on as normal. This isn't something major as it only happens every few minutes and for next to no time but it's an annoyance if anything and would rather get rid of it if possible.

I have done a test on my RAM / Hard drives and results come back as Good health and no errors. I've Defragged HDD's as well plus I've gone into the Bios to change the 4 numbers as they were wrong and I've changed it to 1600 but still it hasn't fixed the issue.

I keep the FPS showing and that stays at 60 even when the freeze happens so it's not an FPS issue.

I have updated the Bios / LAN and Audio drivers which has not helped at all. I have checked around and what I've tried is pretty much what everyone is suggesting so if anyone has any other suggestions I'd really appreciate it :).

Any other info you need just ask.

It sounds to me like a software or driver problem. Possibly a network card or WLAN adapter looking for a network or something. OR software scanning for something.
I would try disabling any unused network adapters. Checking what software you are running, if there are background scans for something like Windwos search for example. Try and close any un-needed programs and see if the problem persists.

Checked in Device Manager and there's only one Network Adapter. I checked in Task Manager and closed windows Search, I'm not sure what else to close as I have no Idea what they are / do haha. I have 63 background processes.

I've uploaded three screenshots of all the background processes if you'd have a look and see if anything should be closed

63 is not a lot.. I looked at the list but i'm stumped!
I would probably just start disabling things and see where it goes!
Windows search is a service btw - so you can kill the process, but i think it will restart itself.

Basically, i would start in the direction of anything network + disk related...

The Alkamai service? Streaming/upload? Do you need it while playing games?
Same goes for the nVidia streaming service, are you actually streaming games over your network?
Things like this.. turn them off and see where it goes. Eventually, if you're lucky, you will stumble upon the culprit.

This is interesting, because, when Akamai determines that you are not using a lot of your bandwidth, it becomes active...

"Akamai does not come right out and say it, but the reason NetSession is installed on your computer is to allow them to use your computer to "upstream" content to other users. By installing NetSession, you are allowing Akamai to use your idle bandwidth to upload files to other Akamai users.

Untangling some of the statements from: http://www.akamai.com/html/solutions/client_design_principles.html

"The information that Akamai does capture is similar to a web server and that information is utilized for troubleshooting and network performance monitoring only." That means that NetSession continually sends information about your computer to Akamai.

They say that NetSession will only use your computer when it is "idle or utilizing minimal network resources." That means that NetSession is constantly monitoring your network use, and sending that information to Akamai. And since bandwidth usage varies from second to second, that info must be sent up to Akamai a lot. Wait a minute, didn't they just say they only captured the sort of info that web servers capture? Web servers don't capture info on bandwidth use. What other information does Akamai capture? I could not find any specifics on their site.

So if you install NetSession, you will be joining a peer-to-peer network, and allowing Akamai to deliver files from your computer at times when Akamai deems you to be utilizing your bandwidth minimally."

Did you have a look in the Windows event viewer? Maybe you can sniff out a clue in there.
Here's what i would try.. the next time it happens, minimize your game and head into Control Panel - Management - Event Viewer and check for entries around the time of the problem. I'd suspect either the System or Application lists.

It wasw just a hunch, but i'D say, play any of the games that were giving you the problem...then as soon as it freezes.. head into event viewer and look under 'Error' or 'Warning' for an event that just happened.
That's if whatever is happening actually results in an event being created. But if it does, then it should be the most recent one. It might name the problematic program or process.

Ok, now we need the same thing but from the Windows logs... (1 down) under Application and system.. is where you need to be looking. Again, anything that is logged at or around more or less the same time as your problem.

It has happened a few more times and no logs have been made so maybe I could try installing the game onto my SSD and see if that helps

OK, so at least we know it doesn't create an event!
You can try the SSD and see if it has the same problem.
I know you mentioned in the OP that you already updated drivers.. but have you updated chipset / mobo drivers too?
If it keeps happening when you install to the SSD, i would start to suspect that it may be the SATA drivers. Or it could really just be a faulty component on the motherboard.. it is really hard to tell without being there!!

Come on over then ;D haha. Well I've installed it on the SSD and so far I have gone about 10-15 mins without any stutters *fingers crossed* but if it comes back i'll do what you said and install any updated SATA drivers and see if that fixes it :). I also gave the tower a good clean...lets just say you could've made a sandwich with the dust xD. I'll keep you updated :).
