Random Black Screen Crash with GPU Fan Speeding Up

Okay so I had this problem a while back and now it has gotten worse this week. It happens randomly. Sometimes I can game for hours without a crash and sometimes it crashes just while browsing and no gaming. The screen will just go black and the music keeps playing for maybe 5-10 seconds and the GPU fan just starts going crazy, up and down from loud to quiet then the sound finally freezes and I have to reboot. It's happened in games before and then other times just while browsing or even while nothing was running and I was in the other room.

Specs:
Case: Silverstone RVZ01
Motherboard: Asus P8Z77-I Deluxe WD
CPU: Intel i5 3570k (Undervolted @ 3.4 GHz)
RAM: Corsair Vengeance LP 8GB (2x4GB)
GPU: Sapphire Tri-X R9 290 (Stock Settings)
PSU: Silverstone SFX 450W Gold
CPU Cooler: Zalman CNPS 8900 Quiet

I built it a few months back when the RVZ01 was released. Online calculators have said 450W would be enough power and people I've talked to have reported less than 400W on rigs running 290X cards so I thought I should be fine with this 450W. What is happening? I ran Display Driver Uninstaller and updated to 14.6 and uninstalled MSI Afterburner but it didn't help. I've tried undervolting and downclocking in AB but it still gets the crashes, and it seems to be completely random. I can't figure it out.

Your psu isnt strong enough. the gpu spikes above the calculated wattage and that causes your gpu to crash.

so if it says the gpu uses 150w (average system usage). it actually spikes up to like 220-250 watts. and thats stressing your powersupply causing your system to crash.

The average usage of the gpu is 260w. but the peak is 430w. so your psu is way too weak.

Ill give you $50 for your gpu. and give you a Geforce 6600 128mb for free.

Okay I would believe that if it onnly happened during gaming. Surely my system isn't undergoing power spikes when it's at idle with no programs open, would it?

Regardless, your gpu uses 340w max draw.

So is that a problem? Thats 110W (24%) less than the max of my PSU.

Lol i see hes using a reference model. probably overheating like hell and throtteling itself down to half performance

I still believe your system uses too much power. Borrow a buddies psu and try it out.

There was only one setting under the EPU tab, but I enabled it, I'll see how it goes. The only problem is that normal sized PSU's won't fit. I'd gladly get a bigger PSU but I don't want to go through the trouble of selling my entire case/psu and having to fork out money to buy new ones if I don't have to.

I have a cossair cs600w and i have this problem aswell thinking that i need the 750 wat that is recommended for the r9 290 vapor-x if anyone has any other ideas im all ears
