Random BSOD

Hello everyone,

I have come by the community when I come across issues where my knowledge is lacking and so far the experience has been well. I am trying to figure out a problem to a blue screen in which is occurring on a system I recently built. This problem only started to occur in the past two weeks. This system has been running for about a month now, and until recently the system seems to have been working great. I have also noticed that this only seems to be occurring when playing a game (SWTOR) or (if explained correctly by the customer) video from a website (not given specifics). I have done a Memtest for 1 pass with no errors. Started a chkdsk, ran a few stress tests etc. I can not get the problem to replicate. I sent the PC home last week on the 15th and no problems until the 21st on Saturday.

Crashes during heavy gaming are often the result of heat and/or power issues. What make and model of power supply is this system using?

Make sure the video drivers are fully up to date and that the game in question is fully patched.

Also, how are the system (CPU and GPU) temps at idle and under load?

Last (for now), is anything overclocked (CPU, GPU, memory) on this system? If so, revert to stock speeds until the system stabilizes.

The power supply is a Apevia ATX-AQ700W-BK. When I built this system for the customer I knew he had a video card he wanted to use, however I assumed (for an unknown reason) it would be a 9800GTX. Obviously those a major power differences. The Power supply supports 700 Watts and 44Amps. The video card minimum requirements are 680Watts & 46amps. This, obviously has me concerned when I started stress testing heat and stability. The test (furmark) has been running for close to an hour now, and the temps are 88C and 84C on the video card (2 gpu's). The power supply (considering it is probably over working itself) seems to also be quite hot. I still have not got the system to Bluescreen yet.

Also nothing is Overclocked. Drivers are up to date.

I would probably replace the PSU. Bad power can mask itself as other problems.

If I were powering 2 high end GPUs I would use a quality PSU, like one from Seasonic. No way would I use that particular PSU. If lucky, it is pumping out 600-650W. Under stress anf full load, the current one is not going to hold up.

COLGeek, it is 1 video card with 2 gpu's built in. Keep in mind I also did not know that this video card was what the customer had intended to put into the system. I have found a suitable power supply with plenty of amperage (close to 15A more than necessity) and wattage.

hpdeskjet, I have tested the memory with memtest and it seems to be working fine. The memory is Kingston 4GB Modules (Not high end, they are basic).

This is not supposed to be some extremely high end gaming system. The system was built based around mediocre setup for a relatively decent price for high quality parts. The parts themselves were all highly recommended by others and read a decent amount of reviews so I don't end up screwing myself over on hardware for a customer.

However again the problems don't seem to occur with basic stress testing, memory testing, etc. While the Power Supply may be the issue, I am trying to find some sort of proof. I do have another one on order now.

Understood on the GPU, now. Regardless, the reviews of the PSU in use are mixed at best. What PSU are you replacing it with?

I only suggested the PSU as the culprit since in your first post you said that the crashes occur when gaming or watching video. Not trying to knock your decision making process for selecting the PSU or anything like that.

Typically BSOD's are a problem in which can easily be solved. With enough testing eventually something is noticeable as to why something is crashing. So, I am hoping it is the power supply.

This is marginally better than the one you have in it now (Apevia). Are you paying for this or the customer?

If the customer, I would suggest one of the Corsairs, Silverstones or Seasonics from this list. With PSUs you get what you pay for.

COLGeek the issue I have is trying to explain to the customer that an extra $60 for a "good" power supply to fix the issue then come to find out that may not even fix the issue in the end. Again the Power supply sounds like the most likely item, however I am currently pushing this system as hard as I possibly can and the problem is not re-occurring.

Explaining to a customer that a much better power supply is needed to what he has when it may not truly be causing the problem can cause, tension.

The mobo seems solid. I honestly think replacing the PSU will remedy the situation. Those BSODs are all over the place and, if the PSU is supplying inconsistent power to all parts, it seems like you would get failures from all sorts of places.

maybe try running 3dmark06 and prime 95 at the same time, this will put a heavy load on the cpu and gpu, and If your psu is the problem it should show up while doing this.

Already did a chkdsk. HDD seems to be working fine. I can run a few more tests to see if anything else pops up.

Did you run games or internet videos to check if it goes BSOD?
If it goes BSOD you may try these:
0)Remove the GTX295 to run on integrated graphics, since its H67 that won't be a problem.
1)Reset the BIOS to default.
2)A full format of the hard drive, repartition & reload basic drivers & software.
3)Run games or internet videos, if it goes BSOD again-
i)Remove Kingston modules & put something else.
4)Run games or internet videos again.
If you still hit BSOD, replace the HDD with another HDD in proper working condition. If it's connected to SATA 3Gb/s, connect the replaced HDD to SATA 6Gb/s & vice versa.
5)Now reinstall windows & check again.
I think it may not be a PSU problem.

I can't get it to blue screen on anything I test. I have opened up the game in which it does blue screen however there is no in-game bench test. I had also ran a flash and silverlight test online, which ran for a few hours with no success. If I get nothing else out of the HDD test (still going) or a longer memory test then I will probably reinstall.

Almost certianly a RAM problem, not an HDD problem. Sorry to send you down the wrong path before. Test each stick of RAM one at a time. If memtest86 passes both sticks, run the OS with one at a time for a day or two, and if you don't BSOD, swap sticks. I STRONGLY suspect bad RAM, given the types of BSOD messages.

Dang it, I'm doing REALLY crappy at reading today...

The address thats causing a problem is around the address of 0xfffff800'xxxxxxxx or so. This indactes that the secondary stick of RAM has a problem somewhere around that address. [The actual failure address varies, so I'm guessing the entire block is bad]. Take out the first stick of RAM and test with the second, by itself.

Gamer, Thank you for your replies. Earlier today I was testing both sticks. The test went on for 2 1/2 hours with no errors. memtest version 4.20. With that being said I took out the first stick and tested the second stick as you advised. It has been going for 30 minutes or so with no errors.
